@thecreativeone91 Ditto, and we never replace monitors either. They seem to fail reliably at the 5yr mark in a hot dusty environment so we cycle all the oldest / crap ones through the gym & front desk locations.

It seems to happen with most expensive laptops. They just aren't worth it.better to keep desktops for performance and laptops for mobility.

I owe you an I told you so. Ditching the ASUS too and back on my workstation. Ordered a new motherboard and GTX 980. Going to pick up a weaker laptop.

Turns out that even on the highest end gaming laptops money can buy ( that aren't $4,000+ w/ SLI and 3 minutes battery life ) you can't develop for Oculus, which is my next little adventure.

Sidenote: God it's good to be back on a desktop

Yeah, do this to a local NAS or USB attached storage.

      Perfect, thank you.

I ordered one earlier, and then find out in a NewEgg video that opening the case voids your warranty. Super annoying. I have no use for a 7200 RPM drive or the power it consumes so would love to just pluck that out.

@notverypunny, had some wishful thinking after seeing references to netDMA and Andy Grover, the developer of the iSCSi targetcli freebranch and now stratis who posted all the benchmarks and papers on ioat, and speeding up iSCSi type IO using RDMA / RoCE between Hypervisors is my goal. But then could not find Andy Grovers actual ioat patches or benchmarks to look for myself - 404s.

This is RAID 1. RAID 1 with a quintuple mirror. This would border on the crazy. Even with spinning rust, a standard RAID 1 (two way mirror) has a failure rate lower than 1/160,000 years. Each additional drive in the mirror takes that up orders of magnitude.

With the first option I was just mentioning an arbitrary, contrived example of another span configuration the controller would let me do in its Raid 10 config wizard in hopes that if there was a flaw in my 2-drives-per-span thinking someone would point it out to me. Everything you've said makes sense, thank you.

Do you have any NICs in the expansion slots? I don't know if you can disable their booting ability, and even if you can, they probably still need to load something at boot time that is separate from the MB BIOS/UEFI.

I think it's just a single Intel 4 jack network daughter card and not in an expansion slot, I'll look into that, thanks.

Which setting was it that you changed from what to what?

It's in the system setup section, can't remember exactly where, but something along the lines of "set link speed to gen2/3", guessing that toggles the PCIe mode, thereby adding way more bandwidth between the drives and RAID controller. I don't have physical access to the servers at the moment so can't get in there to give you the exact info, sorry. But Link gen speed 2/3 should be enough to help you spot it if it's in your options.

LOL thought you loved iDRAC? 😛

They're currently sitting in boxes inbetween datacenters so unless you know about a more Harry Potterish version of iDrac that requires no electricity or Internet connection I don't think iDrac will help. :PPPP

I do not believe that turning off the virtualization capability of the processor via the BIOS will change the performance of the processor. My understanding of that ability to lock that down is simply that it is a security feature or a control feature, not a performance one.

That's helpful, thanks. I guess I'll leave it on.

Ahhh, I think I get what you mean. So given that it works that way, and given that our previous approach of pre-overprovisioning the drives didn't work ( http://mangolassi.it/topic/4614/how-should-i-determine-exact-over-provisioning-levels-for-1tb-samsung-850-pro-ssds-to-be-used-in-a-raid-10 ), is there just no way to do this?

I have a feeling that there is not. If you are going to do this, you need to control the RAID provisioning. But I am not sure if the RAID card is going to work with you on this or cause problems. That would depend very specifically on the drives and the controller and how they interact.

      ?

I think you mean MBR or GPT. MBR has a 2TB limit. MBR is the older Standard. if it's a modern os there's really no reason not to use GPT.
