      Does anyone know if there are any graphics amplifiers out there that works with USB Type-C laptops without Thunderbolt 3?

      This isn't a NIC teaming situation.

      The OP has one internet connection that needs to be split over two servers.

      Normally one would install a switch and then run a cable from each server to the switch, and the switch to the internet... BUT - in this case, the OP doesn't have an open power socket for the switch (it would cost them more money) so they are looking for a way to do ICS (Internet connection sharing) from one server to the other.

      This really seems like a bad idea. I'm guessing this means no Out of Band connections for the servers, and only a single connection for both servers. So if the first server dies, the second one becomes useless.

      Really seems like a time to re-evaluate the priorities here - why are you in a DC if you can't afford these other seemingly needed things.

      Thanks for the response! If the first server died, the datacenter team would pull the cable from the dead server and immediately plug it into the 2nd server, so there'd be a small window of downtime, but it'd theoretically take over all duties immediately. Agree it's a bad idea, but this is all for a hobby project where some downtime is acceptable and I'm trying to really be a cheap muhfuh 🙂

      Not sure that would work. It would depend on how it's set up.

      @coliver Indeed, but what's interesting is how 5 drives specifically beat other quantities of the same drive in Raid 0 on the same hardware from my earlier posts ( can't link to them because Mango Lassi has been freaking out on me and doing weird stuff including not rendering the images as I scroll ).

      To anyone who's curious, in practice my impression is that it makes a HUGE difference. Processor performance on the 980 box is much MUCH better than on the power-strained TI box, which I'm sending back. When overclocked to the same speed, the TI box with identical settings hovers down below 2 Ghz most of the time while the 980 box is up above 4 most of the time w/ load. The disk performance ( same exact drive, just moved ) w/ rapid mode, which is very proc dependent is also much better on the 980 box, breaking 5 GB/s read/write. So, yeah, question answered. The 980 box is also quieter, which I adore. Good thing I don't play many games and the card difference isn't a huge deal, or at least I keep telling myself that.

      @Breffni-Potter

      I have self-admittedly EXTREMELY high standards for what I define as "snappy", and it's a plague that prevents me from using some software ( like some popular IDEs ) because they just can't keep up w/ the pace at which I need to be able to stream code from my fingertips to feel fully productive. Basically I hate waiting for anything small. A new tab to open, one to close, code hinting to process and render, a file list read, a web page to serve and render. Things like boot up or shut down time don't matter to me, because those are one-offs when you're not trying to accomplish something granular. App load times also don't matter, though typically the faster those are the faster the overall "snappyness" will be. It's a quirk, but I think there are a lot of people like me, in fact I've seen a lot of people blow up on smaller scales when their computers aren't responsive. I also feel like I have an exaggerated ability to perceive latency, for example most people I've talked to can't feel that command + tab on OS X is slightly, but palpably slower than alt + tab on Windows ( probably because they have a programmed animation that has an exact, while superficial duration before the stuff is fully faded and at its final static position ). Stuff like that bothers me. The old OS X fullscreen animation used to make me homicidal. It's faster now ( as of El Capitan ), but still obnoxiously longer than it should be. So to answer your question, snappyness is achieved when I don't feel like I'm waiting on an interface to deploy my next keystroke or click, or in more abstract terms, "when a computer can mostly keep up with me". There is not a single mac on the market today, even a $4,000 Mac Pro, that consistently can. End rant.

      Other thing to consider is the larger your power overhead the cooler the PSU will run, the longer it will last. The holy trinity of electronics life.

      Skylake is available for purchase now ( with a release date of Friday after this ), though it seems to be only i5s ( at NewEgg at least ) and it seems they're pretending the procs themselves are sold out in order to force people into combos.

      well if you want yours to be under warranty since it requires a complete tear downm you'll need to get an authorized warrenty place to do it, and they make you go with whatever OEM the brand allows.

      Personally I usually get g.skill or mushkin
