RE: What is your perspective on the overall tone of interactions here on ML?

@kelly said in What is your perspective on the overall tone of interactions here on ML?:
First off, I do not want to have some kind of discussion about civility or point fingers. However, I have noticed from a number of threads that there is a general tendency in the community to find something about a post/topic/thread that is wrong/inaccurate/incomplete and focus on that item to the (to me) detriment of the overall thread.
Am I being too sensitive, or can this be a somewhat hostile place at times? (Telling me that I'm wrong here is not being hostile, btw.)
When I first came here I thought the need for absolute perfection (semantics as an example) was a negative, but I can honestly say that isn't the case. I have been much more accurate with what I am discussing on interviews and it's directly related to this community. At the same time a thread becomes naturally hostile when someone attacks the person instead of the concept being discussed, regardless of how wrong they are. I've been incorrect a lot of the time and when civil discourse occurs it's extremely beneficial for everyone.
It's a good point...
Learning to be more specific in the questions you are asking, and expecting results and answers based on your question.

SPAM
All of us here on ML know that SPAM is illegal and potentially dangerous.
And that no legitimate business would do it.
So my question is ... why do I still get some much of it from legitimate looking companies? What are they thinking?

I certainly learned my lesson. All DELL parts in DELL production servers.
All from xByte, of course.

Right, doing what @JaredBusch says on the iPhone is like unplugging the battery, if you could.
Like holding in the power button on a PC/server.

Thanks.
And now this is no longer the most boring thread ever on ML.
That would actually be interesting. A section for boring threads.

@Dashrender Yep. Just one reason why PCI isn't about security, it's about passing the blame.
Can also replace PCI with HIPPA here and it stays true.

Site loads REALLY slowly here in Montenegro, but most things do, so doesn't mean much.
You should have a term for a sentence like that.
"Doesn't rate well with users who are elephants, but then nothing really does."
LOL.

Another Personal Storage Discussion
When I joined ML, I was saving all my data to my local hard drive. I used OneDrive to have my data accessible in the cloud. I used CrashPlan to back all the local data up (including the synced OneDrive data). And I used a SED (self-encrypting drive).
I figured this was the perfect setup, but after a few weeks at ML, I started to have second thoughts as many people pushed the "no local data" philosophy.
So, I gave it a whirl, and I have to admit it's been pretty good. And it does make sense in many ways, especially with cloud aware applications such as Office 2016.
But some discussion here on ML last week really got my spooked to what my main issue has always been with this...no actual backup. What happens if someone were to hack my OneDrive account and delete all my files? What if somehow all the files got deleted? I know @scottalanmiller always says you have to trust that not to happen, but still...
My initial thought was ... just sync everything back to my computer, and then back that up to CrashPlan (or Back Blaze or whatever). And really the only issue I can see with that is the fact of having local data back on the computer. Plus it is a lot of local hard drive space I need. (I use a SSD.) It's not like I have NSA secrets, but I would prefer my files not to be out in the wild should I lose my laptop. Could I use a local desktop at my house (or a server/NAS)? Sure but the same loss issue is in play.
Perhaps just make the OneDrive password as strong as possible and hope for the best?
Maybe put the data back locally, and somehow secure the data?
Anyway, I am curious to know how everyone else deals with this issue. Do you feel you have a rock solid procedure? Or are you OK "sacrificing" certain areas?
(In the spirit of the debate tonight) ... thanks for your time.

She is more concerned with Contacts and photos...so....I manually set an iCloud backup on old phone and she will leave phone with me overnight as it does a backup over our WiFi here at work...will see if her new phone slowly syncs that new data...otherwise, I will try the other suggestions listed above...
I bet she fills up her new 256GB iPhone in record time...
Contacts are stored .... where? Not in something like GMail or whatever?
She does it all on iCloud...
That almost seems impossible.
iCloud backs up automatically when you are plugged in and on WiFi. Unless she was never on WiFI the past year.
She is never (or rarely) on WiFi and if she is, it may be because her phone is so full, it never completes a WiFi backup in the time she is in WiFi...she doesn't use WiFi at home...just cellular data...since this phone is no longer activated, it has to use WiFi...
If that phone has been sitting in your office for days (like the week you've mentioned) did it not try to backup over your WiFi already?
OK She's never on WiFi - sounds like an actual, real life backup solution needs to be discussed, she's breaking the typical (WiFi based) one.
I've tried...so many times on backup solutions for her...she is nice about it but doesn't trust it...she is so worried about losing her pictures...I've been trying to get her to accept a backup plan for a few years now...
LOL - so worried, but so unwilling to do anything about that worry. Well, one day her phone will die, and the backups won't be there, then she'll see where her concerns really were.
Her words say one thing, but her actions clearly say another - really Scott should be making this post not me.
Yeah, where's is @scottalanmiller
Let him talk to her. LOL.
