Definitely an interesting concept.
Especially in the license-free world of Linux.
Much easier to separate data and applications into multiple servers when you can just stand up a new server when you want it.

BTW, offtopic, but I installed WordPress in a Vultr CentOS instance today.
Holy cow ... SO FAST!!!
Never going back to hosted.....

CentOS. Because there is no compelling reason to look at anything else and by default I always start there - it's the best known, most stable, best supported. So unless you have a specific reason to look elsewhere, that's what you use IMHO.
So @scottalanmiller and I were discussing offline the new Liuns server I set up for hosting my own web server.
After this who thread, of course I went with CentOS. I mean, after the above quote, why would anyone choose anything different.
Of course, @scottalanmiller says he uses Fedora for web servers. It would be silly to use anything else.
I of course, say WTF, yell to no one in particular that this is why Linux is so frustrating and confusing, and refer back to this thread, and also the thread he mentions all the distributions, and doesn't even mention Fedora.
So, ML, discuss! Is Fedora the best choice for web servers? Is this thread (where it is said CentOS is the clear choice) misleading? (Feel free to fork this if necessary.)
I'm a CentOS junkie, and I admit that fact. See, I'm at step #1.
Fedora is where RedHat/CentOS think it will be headed. The major reason for using Fedora over CentOS for a web server right now is that CentOS has an old version of PHP in their repository (5.4), whereas Fedora has a newer version. I'm not sure what version they're up to tho, is it still the 5.x series or 7 now?
I actually figured out how to update that yesterday. I should post that on the "WP on Centos" article @JaredBusch wrote.
I had a few small issues (with a ZIP program) that @scottalanmiller helped me figure out.

When is doing a backup incorrect and when is not doing a backup correct in this situation?
When is doing an EXTRA backup. That's the biggest question.
Where are you getting the "Extra" backup from? Especially in cases of O365. If MS has a backup, but won't let you request it... Is it really a backup (since you can't put your hands on it if you need it)?
This is always the thing.
For me, the case for backup is
a) if a hacker gets access to your admin creds and destroys everything
NOTE: @scottalanmiller will say if they wanted to do this, they could just destroy your backups, as well, but that's not the case if they are stored on a separate off-site system
b) a user deletes something, and it filters out of the site recycle bin
So to add some info here...
Is there anything else I need to do, or can I now install another DC?
With many things on ML, it comes out to semantics and asking the right original question.
But often people don't know what original question they really want to ask!

c) totally move to the cloud
If you are small enough, JumpCloud is completely free.
We are not that small, unfortunately.
Well then the answer should be obvious... you need to downsize.
Are you available to come in like George Clooney in "Up In The Air" and make the cuts?

The apps are of little concern, but you can encrypt them too. Some apps, not MS ones, might be vulnerabilities and write to the application space instead of user space. IE should not, not since XP. So it isn't included in any concern that was outlined above.
You always argue from the world where you have total perfect control over everything.
Most of us do not work in this same world, and have to support all manner of things.
Is it right? Should we quit and work for a place that values "pure IT" ... sure, but I bet more companies do weird stuff and use weird apps that might write to the C drive than not.
So as everyone here knows, I need to upgrade our domain off of Server 2003. I want to do this sooner than later (AKA, immediately) so I've been going through some options and talking with a few people offline.
Basically we have a simple setup, ~15 users. Servers are just used for the basics ... AD, file/print server, DHCP, etc..
These are the options I think are available. Would love some feedback on what YOU would do here.
OPTION 1
Buy 1 copy of Server 2016 and install 2 new VMs, upgrade the domain, move the data/services, retire old VMs.
Upside: Easiest route
Downside: Cost (~1500). Also would have DCs doing multiple jobs (AKA holding data) due to keeping licensing costs down.
OPTION 2
Migrate away from Microsoft servers and install CentOS servers for everything. Use Samba instead of AD.
Upside: Free and gets us away from MS licensing. Some people (such as @scottalanmiller) say I will not even notice a difference
Downside: Does not seem particularly easy based on articles I have found online. Domain will be stuck at 2008 levels.
OPTION 3
Get rid of the on-prem stuff and migrate fully to the cloud.
NOTE: this is not currently an option I am looking into
I would be interested to hear everyone's opinion on what they would do, and also any other options that might be out there. Or, of course, if I am missing something.
And ... go!
That's definitely an option. Just totally scrap AD and local storage and move everything to the cloud.
I mean, that's my ultimate goal ... maybe I just skip the middle steps and do that now.
Patient: Doctor, it hurts when I do this.
Doctor: Stop doing that.

I still love XenServer and XenOrchestra as my one of choice for now. But then i'm only running small Linux/Windows servers on it anyway like Zabbix, Radius, Unifi. Nothing full production like the DC or Dynamics/SQL
Same here, but cautiously watching...
@momurda said in So you want to build a Security Program? Part 1 - Vulnerability Scanning:
Running
rpm -qa | grep kernel
showed 5 or 6 kernels still installed. whoops.
package-cleanup --oldkernels --count=2
removed all but the current and next oldest one.
OpenVAS FTW.

Right. Isn't that in UPS 101?

Or more, yes of course. There are exceptions, but very rare.
I never patch so it's not a concern.

We are still waiting for the plane to land. Hopefully it gets escalated to higher management. Looking for SW to get involved with cleaning up some stuff with the collection agency.
DId it land yet? Was she flying to Jupiter? (The planet, not the city in FL.)
Is Jupiter even still a planet? Seems like every year they demote a planet.

That is not how any of this works.
You can't keep saying that without posting an appropriate meme. I think that is an internet foul.

@wrx7m said in Color Laser Printer - Recommendations, Please:
I have an old Brother 4150 CDN color laser printer that is used by about 20 people. I am estimating that it does about 15,000 pages a month. The toner likes to leak out of the sides by the rollers and contaminate the rest of the rollers and ultimately the pages. So, I am looking for a decent color print-only replacement.
I know HP printers aren't what they used to be. Are the "Enterprise" printers any good?
What are you using (or would you use) in this scenario?
Retire some of the people. What reason would those people have for printing an average of 25 color pages every day? Not being helpful at all (sorry), I was just blown away by the volume.
My best color experience was with the OfficeJet Pro x line. Very fast, way better color than a laser, and not much more expensive than laser to operate: http://store.hp.com/us/en/pdp/hp-officejet-pro-x576dw-multifunction-printer.
I fight here constantly about people printing out a draft of something, with like one letter in color.
STOP!!!!
