My Thumbnail Topic Image Link Collection
-
I started collecting good thumbnail images to use for topic thumbnails on ML and realized that keeping them in a text file on my own machine made no sense when I could keep an updated list here instead for everyone to use. No reason that you have to use these, but having a handy list of them here seems like it would be great for everyone. And allows everyone to easily collaborate on what makes good thumbnails. I'll try to keep this updated with good ones when I find them. I'll not update it with crappy ones that we are using while looking for a good one. In many cases, I am modifying things to make them work.

Loading of unread or really any list of the threads is definite slower on my mobile device now.

Will have to track down the slow sources and eliminate them.

Wonder what the legality of using this is.

Which one? Since they are links and not on the site itself, they are fully legal. We are only linking to other content currently. Any take down issues go to the host.
-
If an image gets taken down at the host for an issue, it would automatic disappear here too.
-
There is always a certain amount of grey area around image fair use. The problems come from the fact that it is a public forum and every link goes elsewhere. All forums have the same issue. If you look at SW, for example, in any thread people can upload images. If someone finds a specific image that is an issue, they send a take down request. Doesn't have to be a formal one. You can take any of these images from wherever they exist today, go to any normal forum and upload them into the conversation. All public forums face the same issues there. Only way around it is to have no images or media at all. Even then, you still have risks of quotes and such.
-
You also have the legality of hijacking someone else's bandwidth by just grabbing the link to the image on their site.

Are you aware of any legality issues with that? I looked it up and according to Wikipedia is fully legal as it is not us showing it, but them. They have the option of displaying or not displaying. ML is not doing it at all. It is not coming through the ML site. This is something that I've followed since the 1990s and to my knowledge has always been fully legal and tested.

Remember that the links are between the browser and the host, not the site with the linkage. The browser is able to block or display, the host is able to block or display. The images can be viewed directly. It's now CDNs work. Most of the images here come from the CDN.
-
Specific case in which the US Federal courts decided that there was no legal issue here: " Perfect 10, Inc. v. Amazon.com, Inc., the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit explained why inline linking did not violate US copyright law:"
-
That's copyright, doesn't address bandwidth specifically, but if bandwidth is an issue, all URL links would be as well as they also ask the browser to potentially download something.
-
@JaredBusch I think he made it pretty clear he doesn't care. This is why I have hot linking disabled on all my websites. Even if it isn't illegal, what's the right thing to do morally?

How do you plan to do that? Will you continue to do even so often?
What happens when no one can use the site at all due to a third party image?
Remember a slow loading image is much worst then image that doesn't load at all.
-
@scottalanmiller By using images hosted by someone else, you are flat stealing their bandwidth.
I never said a thing about copyright.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Theft_of_servicesHow many of these people did you ask if you could jack up their bandwidth usage by posting an inline image on ML to their server?

Even Wikimedia recommends against it, but does allow it..
@wikimedia article said:
Directly using a Commons file via embedding its URL ("hotlinking") is also possible, but is not recommended.
-
Also, don't use Imgur to host image libraries you link to from elsewhere, content for your website, advertising, avatars, or anything else that turns us into your content delivery network.

I just always assumed it was allowed in the imgur ToS since that is how things were setup here.
So @Minion-Queen I think you have a problem that needs resolved.
