Are you aware of any legality issues with that? I looked it up and according to Wikipedia is fully legal as it is not us showing it, but them. They have the option of displaying or not displaying. ML is not doing it at all. It is not coming through the ML site. This is something that I've followed since the 1990s and to my knowledge has always been fully legal and tested.

Remember that the links are between the browser and the host, not the site with the linkage. The browser is able to block or display, the host is able to block or display. The images can be viewed directly. It's now CDNs work. Most of the images here come from the CDN.

That's copyright, doesn't address bandwidth specifically, but if bandwidth is an issue, all URL links would be as well as they also ask the browser to potentially download something.

@JaredBusch I think he made it pretty clear he doesn't care. This is why I have hot linking disabled on all my websites. Even if it isn't illegal, what's the right thing to do morally?

Remember a slow loading image is much worst then image that doesn't load at all.

I just always assumed it was allowed in the imgur ToS since that is how things were setup here.
So @Minion-Queen I think you have a problem that needs resolved.

It's specifically what the NodeBB platform does. It's built in with one of the original plugins.

Yes, we went through with Imgur's policy on how to do this. They have a setup specifically for this use case.

When Imgur was set up, we went through their policies. It may be that the ToS is different depending on the type of account that you have set up. They have CDN as a specific service offering. But we can look at moving to S3 if people are really disliking Imgur.

Just checked, all other services have been removed from NodeBB, even ones that are not "official." There used to be plugins for several services, like S3. But when I search, it looks like Imgur is the only thing that is supported. @JaredBusch do you see any other options? Imgur is a plugin, but it is an official one from the core team like the markdown.

That's correct, although I don't think that I said it, that I do not care because I believe it is how the web and sites are designed to be used. I have been having this discussion for twenty plus years now and feel decently strongly about this. However, this thread is not the place for that discussion, we should open a new one to discuss the merits or moral ambiguities of hot linking. But I will say that if you use anchor tags, I see you as a hypocrite because that does the same referencing. And wonder why you use the web if you don't use its resources. But I'll make a thread to discuss that separately.
