My Thumbnail Topic Image Link Collection

Remember that the links are between the browser and the host, not the site with the linkage. The browser is able to block or display, the host is able to block or display. The images can be viewed directly. It's now CDNs work. Most of the images here come from the CDN.
-
Specific case in which the US Federal courts decided that there was no legal issue here: " Perfect 10, Inc. v. Amazon.com, Inc., the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit explained why inline linking did not violate US copyright law:"
-
That's copyright, doesn't address bandwidth specifically, but if bandwidth is an issue, all URL links would be as well as they also ask the browser to potentially download something.
-
@JaredBusch I think he made it pretty clear he doesn't care. This is why I have hot linking disabled on all my websites. Even if it isn't illegal, what's the right thing to do morally?

Loading of unread or really any list of the threads is definite slower on my mobile device now.
Will have to track down the slow sources and eliminate them.
How do you plan to do that? Will you continue to do even so often?
What happens when no one can use the site at all due to a third party image?
Remember a slow loading image is much worst then image that doesn't load at all.
-
@scottalanmiller By using images hosted by someone else, you are flat stealing their bandwidth.
I never said a thing about copyright.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Theft_of_servicesHow many of these people did you ask if you could jack up their bandwidth usage by posting an inline image on ML to their server?

Even Wikimedia recommends against it, but does allow it..
@wikimedia article said:
Directly using a Commons file via embedding its URL ("hotlinking") is also possible, but is not recommended.
-
Also, don't use Imgur to host image libraries you link to from elsewhere, content for your website, advertising, avatars, or anything else that turns us into your content delivery network.

I just always assumed it was allowed in the imgur ToS since that is how things were setup here.
So @Minion-Queen I think you have a problem that needs resolved.
-
Even the logo is hotlnked!

It's specifically what the NodeBB platform does. It's built in with one of the original plugins.

Yes, we went through with Imgur's policy on how to do this. They have a setup specifically for this use case.

When Imgur was set up, we went through their policies. It may be that the ToS is different depending on the type of account that you have set up. They have CDN as a specific service offering. But we can look at moving to S3 if people are really disliking Imgur.
-
Just checked, all other services have been removed from NodeBB, even ones that are not "official." There used to be plugins for several services, like S3. But when I search, it looks like Imgur is the only thing that is supported. @JaredBusch do you see any other options? Imgur is a plugin, but it is an official one from the core team like the markdown.

That's correct, although I don't think that I said it, that I do not care because I believe it is how the web and sites are designed to be used. I have been having this discussion for twenty plus years now and feel decently strongly about this. However, this thread is not the place for that discussion, we should open a new one to discuss the merits or moral ambiguities of hot linking. But I will say that if you use anchor tags, I see you as a hypocrite because that does the same referencing. And wonder why you use the web if you don't use its resources. But I'll make a thread to discuss that separately.
-
While I don't agree that hotlinking is an ethical issue, at this time at least without a discussion to show me why I am wrong personally, I am perfectly willing to concede that it is perceived as an issue and that people feel strongly about using CDNs, even those with APIs and accounts for this usage. Perception for a public website matters far more than fact, of course.
So that being the case, I will research how we can move to locally hosted images. Sadly our plan to move to S3 has been thwarted by a drop in support for that short of building our own support which is not likely going to happen.
This leaves a few technical hurtles that might really impact site performance.
-
Issues that I am aware of that we face with internal image hosting:
- How do we handle uploading to multiple nodes? This is a NodeBB hurtle, is anyone aware of how this would be handled practically?
- Is there a way to make NodeBB upload to a media node (without using NFS to mount a directory of course) so that we could have images "hotlinked" from a separate service like media.mangolassi.it? Same as local uploading but not assuming a local machine?
