sigh No upside down ducks for you.
So there is some quality control, but... that might be just because I posted the actual question here. You know, snooping and all. It was fun while it lasted -
Wondering how much it's costs to get @scottalanmiller to come In and talk hardware refresh with us I really want to move from 3 hosts + SAN, to Scale system. But I know our current MSP will befell the board and get them to buy a SAN.

Won't three new hosts and a new SAN cost more than a Scale cluster? Plus explain to them the problems with IPODs and how Scale isn't one.

So you have your resume ready to go, right? Because if you know that, you know exactly how valuable they see you as.

what is your role in the organization? Assuming you are a full time IT person, who is running the MSP? Normally I would ask if you really need an MSP when you have an onsite full time IT person, but perhaps there is enough work to warrant that. But perhaps they aren't really an MSP to you, but instead are consultants, once that your management appears to value more than you.

To answer the question as best I see it.
The IT role here is to keep the stores and Admin staff running, so that's everything from Help desk 1st line to replacing PC's, Switches even installing Servers/VM's for things like HR dept. I think myself more as a infrastructure IT man as I prefer to be playing with hardware and cables, improving network security, wireless systems, etc.
The main role of the MSP is to support/monitor/do things to the "main" datacentre infrastructure that's housed here in HO. So that's the 3 ESXi Hosts, SAN, Core switches. Also give us a level 3 support on PC/Network issues if we need them.
TBH in the 3 years I've been here I have improved a lot of things here and have been acknowledge for it. But there is still the "security" blanket feeling management get having the MSP. But having said that they are putting more and more past me to "check" and give input, like they have given the task of looking at the MPLS renewal.

Having said all that still be nice to get scott in and pull the entire company apart a refresh the whole lot. I know a lot but having someone like him by my side would be nice lol.

You can only agent based, file level backups on ESXi free from what I understand. The VM level APIs are disabled by VMware.

Yeah the free version of ESXi forces you to use Agent based tools. The Backup API's are stripped out of that version to get people to buy ESXi.
Which seems insane.....

F**k it i'm going to be naughty (for the rest of the day) for the greater good of my sanity
Going to apply a "trail" license for FULL ESXi so I can backup the VM's on my host. Kill the host! and reinstall with XenServer in the production lol
