How much do you want to do it, versus paying them to do it?
Also why not just build a new DC out of 2012 and migrate the rolls?

Not an issue paying them. More an issue most probably quicker if I do it lol.
Might copy the image of the DC and try it in my test lab first lol

Ummm, why?
It is a DC, you spin it up, join it to the domain, promo it, done.

Yeah but is it that simple!!!!!!
This is a network I didn't set-up and so many things are wrong lol like Citrix Licensing server doesn't work correctly after Acronis was installed. So god knows whats on the DC and "cloud" be a problem. Hence thinking let the MSP do it -

But if it DOES go wrong...how much money extra will have to be paid for them to fix it..?

At least it shouldn't. and I agree that it rarely if ever does.

Changing functional level or some other possible pre req or transferring roles after added may have issues. But simply adding a DC? No.

It's not like adding a DC does nothing. It creates new sync partnerships, etc. While I agree that it's HIGHLY unlikely that something bad will happen, I must leave room for the possibility.

I think it was more the "turning the old one off" that could cause issues if I read it right, as in he's not sure what they set to run from the old DC when it was made/over the years etc?
