      Youtube Video

I was taught this particular lesson back in 1994 and it sticks with me still today. Customizing our environments wastes time trying to tune our environments to us, rather than us to them. As IT Pros, we are not end users and we have to conform to the needs of what we support, not the other way around. When there is a true need, our customized environments won't be there for us.

I haven't watched the video, but I do agree with this.

Each time Windows changed the Start Bar, colleagues would do their best to revert it to something closer to the old version. Me - I just used it as default. I figured I needed to learn it, because that's what I'd be supporting for others. Just a simple example.

I am unable to watch the video right now, but It's worth mentioning (if you haven't) that the shift away from this is happening as we transition to the cloud.

Using strict best practices like separate subnets for app funcitons like web, db, etc ; strict security rules, and autoscaling will lead to very little customiztion.

Having a poorly customized infrastructure on the cloud is very expensive. Poor resource management becomes more obvious when we look at a monthly billing model vs buying and forgetting with on prem.

Did not watch the video, but @scottalanmiller has talked about this before. This is about IT customizing their daily work environment.

I watched, its great advice. It is something I have always instinctively known but have never really been able to articulate. When SHTF, all the fancy trinkets and add-ons go bye-bye. Thanks Scott!!
