In a Windows world, it seems it would be better to create a Storage Space, because it gives you the flexibility to extend the storage instead of having to add/mount another virtual drive if you were to run out of space.

Exactly. Same logic applies universally, always best to have that flexibility on your platform. It has no real overhead, but protects against the unknown.

Also, accepting insecure email is different than allowing your organization to send insecure email.

Very true. Accepting things insecurely is better than sending them.

I accept email in any way that it is sent. But all sent email is required to be TLS or it will not send. I have a couple of people that the boss cannot email because of it, as well as one prior customer that is still running an ancient ass GroupWise 6 email server. They email asking for one off support for their routers sometimes.

From that, you've drawn a huge number of untrue assumptions, such as I'm not really IT,

Where did I draw that conclusion? I asked you if you were and you've not said one way or the other. That's all. Repeating that you work for an ISV, whatever that means to you, in no way whatsoever answers the question. Just because an ISV is in no way an IT organization doesn't mean that they don't hire some IT staff internally. I feel like you are saying it to try to tell us you're not in IT, but it doesn't imply that.

Just like working at McDonald's includes both flipping burgers and being a CIO.

ISVs tend to have incredibly small IT needs, in general. But they certainly need IT. As someone that's owned an ISV for a very long time, we certainly have IT. But we don't offer IT, we offer software. But developers need IT support too. As do the office staff, etc.

@Carnival-Boy said in People Fear Change More Than They Actually Hate the Change - SAMIT:

Yeah, time is a big problem with dealing with change. I work in the Microsoft SaaS ERP space and Microsoft release a new version every month and they're constantly changing things and sometimes it feels like a full time job just to keep up with it all. I can lose 15 minutes just trying to find something after they've moved the menus around.

Sometimes I just think "slow down, I can't keep up".

That's a weird thing that I find from Microsoft. They make "staying on the same product" sometimes harder than "switching to a totally different one that feels more familiar to end users."

Office 2007 was the famous example. LibreOffice felt more like O2003 than O2007 did. People wanting to stay with what they knew, changed.

I'm liking these non-IT technician focused videos.

Thanks! I'm hoping to broaden the audience and make tools that IT staff can either use directly by sharing with management or learn from on how to present to management.

Far too often IT is pressured to make business decisions that other business stakeholders should be involved in.

And vice versa, tons of times untrained people with no IT insight or knowledge make all the critical IT decisions and just have the staff classified as IT deal with the mistakes rather than avoiding them.

Movie looks good too. You have way too much head room though in your framing.
Just angle the camera down slightly so your eyes are above the center of the frame.
It'll look more professional that way.

Thanks, I switched to the media attachment on the GoPro Hero Black 9 so still getting used to that. Overall it seems to work okay, and having a room full of lights helps a lot. But still a bit of learning curve.

@scottalanmiller Yes. This I know. But this isn't bare metal but rather SmartOS hypervisor in a Triton datacenter. So I presume all is atop ZFS. I never delved deeper so honestly do not know.

Hopefully not, as ZFS isn't all that fast. But you need XFS touching WiredTiger... what's lower in the stack isn't what it is concerned with. You still control your own filesystem regardless of what the datacenter may or may not use elsewhere.

I am surprised that MS didn't come out with a better solution for this ages ago. That whole Direct Connect or whatever it was called - phone home VPN solution they have for Enterprise edition only - what a kluge.

They are working on phasing this out. DirectAccess was a kludge that is being replaced by Always-On-VPN. Which works on versions of Windows Professional and Up and requires very little outside of a certificate and Group Policies (or Intune).

@Dashrender said in Disconnected: Why Companies Encourage Bad IT Decisions:

The one place the presentation doesn't really hit on is reliability of the circuit. Of course to wit Scott will say - US carriers of old school telecom are horrible, and most ISPs are equally as reliable, if not more so than carriers. And unlike carriers, you can likely more easily setup redundancies with the ISP, when was the last time typical businesses setup redundancy on their phone service?

Not really a place where the CEO should care. In a healthy organization, Jared's presentation would be from the telecom person or team to the CIO. The CIO would just inform the CEO of what they are doing, if he even needed to know. A CEO should not be stuck in the weeds of demanding to understand why modern infrastructure is more reliable than legacy infrastructure.

Right, but in that case the case is made to the CIO, not the CEO, because what you stated.
So the CIO would need to know these things, I would think.

Correct, the information is good, but is for "inside IT", not for "the business".

So question - where do you see that CIO person fitting? You've already said they were IT, but are they more an executive - or more IT? or do you not see a difference in this case?

To me, there is no difference. Anyone making IT decisions has to be a business person to do that job. The CIO has to be completely in sync with everything in the business and be thinking completely within the holistic business context. But they must also be a generalist with a deep understanding of nearly every aspect of IT.

This is why a CIO role is rare and expensive... you need someone who would be reasonably expensive in their business role OR their IT role, then the overhead of putting those two roles together in a single human.

And this is why so many CIOs are terrible, they often only have tech skills or business and are unable to bridge the gap which is their role.

If they go after "all" it would over expose the falseness of the whole thing.
