    Upgrading to osTicket 1.11.0

      Tested on CentOS 7 coming from osTicket 1.10.2.

      Now with osTicket 1.11 out, it is time to update! Guides out there tend to be a little lean on real instructions, so here we go.

      First, we assume you have a working, recent osTicket installation. If not, do a new install rather than an update or upgrade.

      Second, cd into your web directory that holds your current osTicket installation (so that you are one folder level above it.)

      cd /var/www/html
      

      You should be able to see your osTicket installation folder there. Something like /var/www/html/osticket. In fact, we will assume that that is its name for this guide.

      Now, make a backup of your database. I have a quick guide to osTicket database backups here. We will also make a backup of our running installation, just in case. You can shut down the web server before doing this, or not. Doesn't really matter. What we are going to do is rename the existing installation so the moment we do this "backup", our running system will disappear.

      mv osticket osticket.backup
      

      Next we need to download the latest version of osTicket.

      wget https://github.com/osTicket/osTicket/releases/download/v1.11/osTicket-v1.11.zip
      

      Next we unzip this file...

      unzip osTicket-v1.11.zip
      

      This produces the confusingly named folder upload. What we will do now is rename this folder to make it our working folder.

      mv upload osticket
      

      The only thing we need from a standard install is the configuration file. We will copy, not move, to make sure we always maintain a working copy to fall back to.

      cp osticket.backup/include/ost-config.php osticket/include/
      

      Now we have to change the owner of our new folder to be accessible by the Apache web server process. In my CentOS or a Fedora system we expect this to be the apache user. Modify as appropriate for your system. Also, and this is a major catch, the zipped file of osTicket 1.11 has no permissions on files and so will not work unless we add read and execute permissions to it for the apache user as well.

      chown -R apache:apache osticket
      chmod -R u=rx osticket
      

      Now you should be able to log back into your osTicket installation (remember to use the /scp extension) and complete the upgrade process through the web interface. When done, you just need to run this to clean up:

      rm -rf osticket/setup
      

      That's it. You are all upgraded. Enjoy.

        @scottalanmiller I really wish I would have known about the GitHub repo for my fresh install. It would have made it so much easier to install.

            After upgrading, the pages would render. Found the following in the logs --

            PHP Fatal error: Class 'DateTimeImmutable' not found

            Just in case anyone else runs into this, you have to update PHP to at least v5.5.

                While you can run the version from github, the devs have asked that you download it from osticket.com/download instead. There is some packaging they do that apparently isn't handled by github (such as setting version number).

                I generally recommend that people upgrade to at least PHP 5.6. If your a stickler for running a version of PHP thats still being support by php.net then you will want to upgrade to something a lot newer as 5.5, 5.6 and 7.0 are no longer under active support, and 7.0 will only receive security updates.

                          We still use it, for now. It's not perfect, but it's not bad. Middle of the road, I guess.

                          For a basic helpdesk it is fine, but there is not time tracking built in, or as a plugin, so I would need an additional solution for that, and it would need to tie in to the tickets. So what is the point of using OSTicket? There are solutions for that.

                            Time tracking would be nice. But lots of shops don't use it. MSPs do, but internal IT often does not.
