Getting rid of Group text as a means of calling out.
-
Currently my company uses a group text to notify each other if they will not be in the office, etc. My boss was asking if there is a better way to deal with that specific problem in a centrally managed kind of way. I
m a little murky on this but I was thinking Rocket Chat? It functions similarly but is centrally managed. -
Group text is a perfect reasonable solution because it requires almost no participation from anyone except the one being out. The recipients, just know that they received a message.
-
You can use also TigerText if you want to. It is free too.

That was my point in asking why another solution is required.
So simple, "out sick" and everyone just gets it. No additional software or services to maintain.

The problem with that is when someone new comes here (me in this situation), if the user doesn't include the person in the group text because they've been using the same group text for 6 months then I wouldn't receive it. Some of people that work here are old as balls and are not interested in learning at all. Before you guys comment on that, I already agree.

Does FreePBX have a SMS distribution feature? Like you could text a DID and it redistributes to whoever is on the list?
-
There's always email, lol.

Why not create a PTO calendar and have folks put their PTO days on it? It could even be a resource mailbox. So send a meeting to the mailbox and all members of the team that need to know. Historical tracking of any and all PTO can be done by checking the resource mailbox's calendar. Simple.

<sarcasm> Or I could just send an email to my boss and one other person? </sarcasm>
Seriously... Why try to overcomplicate things? For planned vacations and such, we do use a calendar here, but for sick days, it's just an email to the boss and one other person.
-
We do this by email. By HR policy, an email goes out to 'Management' which includes each department manager, lead tech, etc. They then either walk around or email others that someone is gone for the day. Person gone also sets their OOO message.

Yeah, seriously, why is email not the answer here?

This was my first thought - what's wrong with email? it's trackable, not stuck in someone's phone, easy to update groups, etc.

Because of people, they just don’t read emails. People are glued to their phones...
-
You might be able to program Twilio to have users opt-in to a notify group, then when somebody is sick or whatever, they message the number and it forwards to all users that are enrolled... That way its easy to adapt to new hires, etc.
Not positive that it can do this, but I was reading some of their stuff on notifications and SMS and it really sounds possible.

I get it, it makes sense to us but to users is a different story

But these are techs right? I'd be very surprised if they also didn't have email on the phone.

Exactly, email and text show up the same since, you know, 2006.

That end users choose to ignore some messages and read others means two things...
- Either format will be ignored at random, choosing text is just as likely to be ignored as email, it's totally random.
- They are choosing to ignore the message, which makes it not the company's problem.
