The "I can't even" thread should be the "SAMIT" thread.

I basically just knew VOIP existed and that's about it. Now having to troubleshoot soft phones and hard phones and the occasional strange soft phone-hard phone combo, it's more on my mind.

Just did a bunch of QoS videos that should be posted to the channel in the next few days that will help with some understanding of VoIP networking as well.

Really enjoyed this video session. I understand there are many business advantages but out of curiosity are there any cool things you can do at home with voip that are unusual and you can't do with cell service?

Sure, like having different extensions for every room and/or family member, calling from room to room, calling securely without the government having access to your calls, video calling, having conference rooms, adding in friends and family to the PBX so that you can all call each other with just extensions, call recording, instant call records, etc.

I do some of those things. Like my dad in NY has an extension on our PBX, so my kids can call my dad anytime and the calls are totally internal and free. He still has to pay for land line calls and has essentially no cell service at his home. And only one of my kids owns a cell phone, so the other can still make calls.

those are some really cool things and very attractive. I have only setup basic stuff so far but need to experiment more.

I like having a PBX for home. And if you decide to operate one for friends and family, it can be great production experience. And add some neat features for them.

Also, your home PBX will work from overseas. Something a lot of cell services will not do, or will not do for free.

Internet access is still the issue over there.

Sure if you have T-mobile (i.e. it works in your home area) you have fewer issues.

Or use a softphone on your computer, or use the console to the PBX

One would assume that any apartment that you get will have internet access.

Yup, I use Linphone on both my cell phone and my laptop, so don't need any hardware. Unless I'm setting up an office, then I'll get a desk phone, but that's rare. Works great.

A lot of people don't like Linphone, but I've had good luck with it.
