Watched the live action version of Bleach. It was pretty good.
Better than the anime? I didn't like the anime.
It depends on what you didn't like about the anime. It is a movie, so it doesn't drag on the way the anime did. It doesn't have as much posing and rhapsodizing. It is clearly an homage to the anime though, so many of the same themes come through.

I didn't like how formulaic the combat/story was and I think they could've cut a lot of the content and made the show better for it.

You realize that this was anime was originally a serialized manga in the Weekly Shōnen Jump magazine? It then became popular and was converted to anime right? A very typical weekly manga to anime.
It is about as typical as it gets when it comes to serialized shōnen stories. Ranma 1/2, Bleach, Naruto, DBZ, Full Metal Alchemist, Attack on Titan, etc.

and yet both iterations of Full Metal Alchemist were way better than Bleach. Bleach was just a crappy show IMO

You are comparing totally differnet things and calling one crap without even knowing why.
FMA was a monthly manga, written by the author to intentionally cover social and moral issues.
Bleach was a weekly manga written by the author because he liked drawing monsters and supernatural stuff. His previous serialized manga was something about zombies.
They are not supposed to entertain the same crowd.
Then of course, knowing you and your predilection for injecting your morality into everything, of course FMA would resonate with you.

It's the quality of the writing and story development that makes FMA a better show. Saying an author liked monsters and the other had a more complex idea with a purpose doesn't change the quality of the product. You can have a story about monsters that is developed well. Bleach just isn't.
As far as me injecting morality into "everything", you have that outlook because you treat people like shit and I have a problem with it.

See, I don't treat people like shit.
But I do not put up with people trying to push bullshit, and most people don't like being called out on their own bullshit.@wirestyle22 said in What Are You Watching Now:

Of course what one person likes is subjective and will be different to the next person.
But you are injecting your bias clearly here by stating FMA was "more complex" when it is not. It is simply about a different subject. Bleach was a drastically "more complex" story by some measures. By those measures FMA was utterly simplistic.

Has anyone ever told you "It's not what you say but how you say it"? I don't care that you challenge what I think. I actually appreciate the way you look at things a lot of the time as it provides me with clarity or at least a different point of view. The entire point of me being here is to learn. It's how you do it that is the problem. You and @coliver think similarly (my opinion) and he does not treat people the same way you do. Try comparing some of your posts to his sometime, even in the same threads articulating the same concepts. If you truly weren't treating someone poorly you'd attack the concept/idea, not the person.

I think we can all agree both are better than the objectively terrible Attack on Titan
-
@momurda I liked the first season but I get the impression that they didn't know where they wanted to go with it. I also liked the first portion of Bleach though before they went into the spirit world.

AoT is a pretty good show, but it takes a lot of getting used too.

The Bleach movie on Netflix is spot on for the very first few chapters, they hit every detail. Worth watching for sure.
As for the arch. . . yeah it kind of killed itself.

I'm giving it some time.

I lost interest in Bleach when it moved from the real world and the interactions there to the Soul Society. After that it seemed to lose its way.

@kelly A lot of fan service

I like Bleach a lot. I enjoyed the (dichotomy?) between the normal and spirit world. It had a large cast of characters that I also enjoyed keeping up with. To me, some of the best stories weren't the ones laden with combat but the more pastoral themes such sitting out by the cherry trees drinking sake. Just seems like something I would do and be happy with.
Attack on Titan was decent I thought. It did take some getting used to at the first but its not bad as I got more into it.

This is what I am talking about. AoT, like Bleach, is a serialized manga that is adapted to an anime.
AoT at least did not try to fill in a random story arc that was outside of the manga. Bleach did, and those arcs show the quality difference. This is a very common thing when a serialized manga gets an anime adaption before it is completed.
For the record, AoT's manga was past the point of where season two of the aime is currently at when season one of the anime ended.
So they very much already knew where the story was going.
You are a fan, but a fan with no understanding of the process..
Trust me, I would never call bleach an example of super great anime, manga, or story. But it is certainly not what you are painting it from a lack of understanding.

The same thing occurred with FMA and they choose to go in a totally different direction. One, Full Metal Alchemist and the other Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood. Both good. It may be common but that doesn't mean I have to like it.

No, but you have to accept that it is the "normal" or "standard" for the genre.
