What Are You Doing Right Now

Yikes. and Im not sure how the boss is wanting this handled.
You guys remember when I said this?
yeah, my boss now wants to stage hard drives (4 ; we use bios raid1(mirror) fakeRAID )
pull said hard drives and take them on site and swap out the hard drives that are on site, then use a hard drive reader to pull the information from the old hard drives, back to the new ones. . . . .
Again, I know what would need to be done.. but.. as my old bosses boss used to say: "This industry isn't like other IT jobs.. This is it's own animal completely different practices here." -

Because his statement is patently false. There are no special cases in business. No business does "bad business decision making" as "good business". That's such a dumb thing for someone to say. But it is often what people say to try to blow people off with an obvious lie when they think that they won't call them on it. And that's what he did. Obviously what he said is wrong. Either he's an ass and knows it's wrong, or he's a ass for working a job putting customers at risk knowing he doesn't have the first clue what he is doing. There is no situation where that statement has any acceptable ethical postion given the context.

is there a way to tell if a computer is licensed for Windows 10 (currently Windows 7) via a Command Line.
From what I've seen lately, if the machine has a legit, activated Win 7 license, you're eligible to upgrade it win 10 (same edition - home, pro, etc).
thanks. I got this email earlier :
We are getting an error that states Windows 7 is obsolete and we need to use Windows 10 on another computer. When we bought the system, I was of the understanding they would be Windows 10 machines. I specifically asked about the OS because I wanted the system to last 8-10 years. Then we discussed the lifecycle of an OS is 5 years for mainstream support and 5 more for extended support. Please let me know why we were sold Windows 7 that was released in 2009 which would have made it 8 years old upon purchase in 2017. Please let me know what we need to do to resolve this issue as soon as possible. Thank you,
The Devices in question are licensed for Windows 10. I wasn't here when the site was installed and He's been to known to bend what was actually said to something that benefits him, a lot in the past year or so.. Regardless the issue is we have to upgrade them to windows 10. I was able to find the SN on a portal from the vendor that tells what it's licensed for.
The machines should also have a sticker on them - either a Windows 10 foil, or a full windows 10 OEM sticker (but i don't think they do OEM stickers anymore).
it has a 8 and 10 sticker. which is really weird but there are 2.
That is weird. Perhaps it came with media for both?
possibly? It was so long ago that I wouldn't be able to find it if i wanted to .
No the thing is : How do I upgrade them to Windows10 without losing data on the hard drives, software. This is how I've been doing it on the PC I'm upgrading:
Download the Windows 10 media creation tool
Go through all the options & then save the ISO file to c:\tmp
Once downloaded, use 7 Zip to expand the ISO to c:\tmp\windows
Run c:\tmp\windows\setup.exe as AdministratorThere's an install option to Keep all files & data.
Before you do that you could create an image backup of the PC using something like Macrium Reflect free or similar.
Why do you unzip it?
I just mount the ISO - maybe you can't mount the iso?
Thought of that first up, but wasn't sure what would happen when the reboots began? Would it remount again automatically after a reboot if it needed to? I wasn't sure so went with the unzip.
I've done them this way for all the machines I've done remotely.
That is absolutely the wrong way to do it. You simply double click on the ISO, double click on setup, click next a lot and you’re done
No it's not mate, it's one way of doing it. It's definately slower than what you've suggested, but it's not an incorrect way of doing it.
It doesn't matter as I've now done all my upgrades and they've all worked, regardless of which way I did them.

They are a decently sized set of cans.
Son's mate gave me a listen to a set of Sony noise cancelling headphones yesterday. They're incredible.

@scottalanmiller oh dear... but in all fairness, I've literally never used the word "jammies" to refer to PJ's or sleepwear of any kind.

Oh, I've heard it, but "jammies" in my world is a generic plural noun that could be used to refer to literally anything.

2 hours? Yikes. and Im not sure how the boss is wanting this handled.
That may or may not be an exaggeration. I've had some take 1 hour, I've had some take 4+... so many factors to consider.
makes sense, But since this customer only hold Phone support contract with us My bass has to make that decision as to what we're going to do to get them up to windows 10
They need to buy it now anyway, so just use a full installer. You don't need to do the update to upgrade the license anymore, as it won't be valid anyway.
What makes the Windows 7 license no valid? I've been wondering why you've said this recently.

I think there is a third option - he truly believes what he's saying and he thinks he's right. Of course Scott doesn't believe people like this exist.
That said - Assuming either of Scott's first two options, a sit down explanation of the setup should get to the bottom of it - but of course, that can likely only happen with the boss's boss there.
