Just got handed an XP laptop with "crucial files that aren't backed up anywhere"... so this file copy better go super smooth or I'm boned.
why are you boned?
By the dictum of "blame the messenger"... if these files fail to copy, it will surely be my fault that they hadn't been backed up anytime for over a decade before I worked here.
The messenger was the guy bringing you the laptop. Be mad at him. Ask him why he classified them as "worthless files." Don't give him time to blame you, be upset now.
I'm just going to copy the files and go on about my day. The laptop is a Dell Precision, so it's a tank. The data is in no real jeopardy except that it has no backup copies to take its place. Soon, that will be rectified.
what? What was wrong with it? Why did they bring you the laptop in the first place?

Sadly I see this situation all the time - well this is IT's fault because IT allowed a situation to exist where the data wouldn't be backed up.
I have actually had my boss tell me this before - I don't recall the specifics, but basically we had to design a system that the user couldn't cause to fail, because we knew that if given the chance, they would!
That's called an idiot proof system... The problem with idiot proof systems is that as we improve them to make them even more idiot proof... the idiots become even bigger idiots...

Yeah, no such thing as idiot-proof. Idiots are ingenious at screwing things up.

They realized they had no backups of anything on it... including some of our original source code for our internal products.

So no crucial files. Good to know. Just throw that bad boy out.
I wish I had a camera that followed you around all your life.
Would love to hear this kind of stuff actually uttered to a boss.
Not saying you haven't. Just would like video proof.

Doesn't keep management from thinking that it's IT's fault still. Of course the better situation is to use the correct department (HR) to solve these types of problems.

So there really wasn't anything wrong - well short of there were no backups - so you rectify that by making backups.. and give the unit back.

He's a consultant - and a HIGHLY paid one at that. In those situations you tend to find yourself being able to be brutally honest to people. Sadly few of us will ever work in that position.

Gonna wipe and reimage the laptop after the backup... but it belongs to the owner, so whatchagonnado? I have great bosses, so if I need to make a quick backup to cover their asses, no problem. They got my back and I got theirs, so much that I won't make a fuss about 12 year old files that were never backed up.

Family dog just passed away. It wasn't "our" dog, but it was kind of shared between my wife's siblings. Very, VERY sweet boxer that had been rescued. Just the nicest, snuggliest dog. He had a heart attack while the family was watching a movie last night. He was asleep and just didn't make it. We had thought that he was only about three years old, but can't be sure. So sad.
I'm sorry for your loss.

That's not even the bad part. It's the no backups. If it isn't backed up, it's not important. Actions speak louder than complaints.
C'mon. How much text did you expect me to include?
All that was needed

I had an XP laptop like this that was used to reprogram the clutch on a 300 Ton punch press.
If the unit ever lost power, the clutch to lock down, and the machine couldn't operate until the clutch was reset (reprogrammed?)
Anyways XP laptop, custom cable from the laptop to an RJ45 plug to the internals of this machine, open a program, and push the settings to the machine, and everything was working again.
Oddly the manufacturer / support guy for the 300 ton press said we should never have to use "that program" to do that.
When pushed to fix the issue, they came back with "we can't fix it"..
So yeah....
Cloned the drive, and instructions, for the day when that laptop dies.

Kicked off a 346,150 / 92GB file Sync between my NAS and an external drive. Should only take about 18 hours to complete.
Next step is to clean up the NAS as it's full of dups and crap..

I guess we were under the impression that you would be blamed and possibly fired if this data was unrecoverable. If that's not the case, well, then let them do whatever they want, as long as it's no risk to you.

I would get blamed, but my previous statement was mostly comedic. I'd have to really screw up to get fired, they like me around here.

Doing the ever-important IT duty of moving furniture in another's office to help them determine the best configuration of their desk.
