@Scale computing nodes...... same limitations I presume?

Sorry for taking a week to see the mention. Thanks for thinking of us.

No, the limitation does not exist on the Scale HC3 clusters. We do not have artificial size limitations. We have tested VMs much larger than 2TB without issue.

Can I just plug this bootable into any old desktop and see if it'll light up? Should I expect any issues?

Can you, yes 🙂 It won't damage anything. Will it work? Not likely. You can't do this with any other OS or hypervisor, you can't do it with Xen either. That's why Xen has to be installed rather than there just being an image that you run. The installation process is the process of customizing it for your hardware.

Just make a new partition, don't worry about extending the existing one.

      Did it rebuild successfully?

I don't know. I ended up setting up the necessary VMs on other hosts and started rebuilding this one since it has been having stability issues in the last few weeks.

Ah okay, probably best but it is nice when you can figure out what happened, just to know what it was 😞

@olivier said in XenServer Export Performance Seems Poor:

You can create a basic backup schedule and de-activate the compression, then run the job manually. You'll have an export without compression.

When I was running my test, it seemed the exporting directly from XC was quicker than running a one time backup from XO of the same VM to the same location. The export of a small VM (I set it up just for testing this) was about 6 minutes, and the backup was 13.

But it sounds like what you are saying is that it should have been the opposite.

@scottalanmiller said in Xen Orchestra / Metadata backup?:

Citrix says to not back up the host and it appears that megadata is stored on the SR. Has anyone attempted to restore without the metadata backup to see what would come up as missing? Having done something basically like this, I thought that I got all of the data that you would be looking for (minus logs.)

It restores the VDIs, but doesn't associate them with VMs. Nor does it create VMs.

So you just have a bunch of VDIs.

Okay, makes sense then. I'd lean towards XenServer with local storage then. You can migrate to CEPH when it is ready. This would get a single node up "instantly" and let you move others as the opportunity arises.

What are/were the limitations of free version? I have forgotten.

1TB of storage. I think that's counting amount of protected storage, but it's been long enough I forget for sure.

Edit: Works real well for me here, adding servers and services as I set them up. We've been using crashplan for file level storage for a long time, so I don't have much being pulled in by Unitrends currently.

@it-admin 4 years later, I encountered the same issue that you did.

The solution for me was do do a PCI passthrough of the physical NIC directly to the VM. This bypasses all virtual switching inside Citrix Hypervisor. I posted the exact steps to implement PCI passthrough on Citrix Hypervisor 8.2 here:

@DustinB3403 Thanks for your help! NFS is case sententive, it is mounted now! 😄

Everything outside of the Windows and DOS worlds is case sensitive. SMB, NFS, URLs, file names, passwords, usernames, everything.

Thats what bugs me about Linux ... I hate case sensitive things.

I'm the opposite, I can't stand that DOS can't tell two characters apart and has "close enough" syntax so that people become sloppy and begin to lose the concept of congruency. I remember dealing with a bunch of students and getting them to understand things like "This", "this" and "t h I s" were not congruent was a real problem. Windows teachers users that exact doesn't mean exact, not always.

I think that is why I like cisco's ios software... i don't have to type the full command... just enough to distinguish it from the other commands available.... I see the benefits of case sensitive, it just will take me a bit to get used to using it as I learn Linux.
