@scottalanmiller said in RAID rebuild times 16TB drive:

Its a system, not an IO, bottleneck typically. Especially with RAID 6. Its math that runs on a single thread.

Distributed storage systems with per object raid FTW here. If I have every VMDK running it's own rebuild process (vSAN) or every individual LUN/CPG (how Compellent or 3PAR do it) then a given drive failing is a giant party across all of the drives in the cluster/system. (Also how the fancy erasure code array systems run this).

Yeah, that's RAIN and that basically solves everything 🙂

This write up sums it up well. It's a "it depends." It depends because it impacts you potentially and generally isn't very important. So therefore, there is no hard and fast guideline.

Pretty cool that after all of these years they are still improving IO performance for parity writes.

Maybe use @francesco provino blog post as a starting point
      http://www.francescoprovino.com/2016/09/06/xenserver-7-software-raid-with-mail-alert/

I think that needs a little fleshed out for the newbies.

But yes, that might be a good starting point.

Of interesting side note, the Linux md RAID system also implements Intel Matrix RAID and DDF (Disk Data Format) software RAID formats commonly used by consumer FakeRAID systems. Because of this, Linux md can sometimes convert FakeRAID into enterprise md RAID if you really know what you are doing 🙂

Once the Installation GUI comes up, I'm going to customize my installation. Desktops are nice to look at from time to time.

It's completely unneeded, but whatever. I want it.

So customize your installation and select "Server with GUI" else select "File and Print Server" for basic file share functionality in a CLI.

      Select Done.

Select your partitioning, the basics are fine. Click into and then click done.

      Lastly click "Begin Installation"

Set your Root password and follow the onscreen guides. Create additional users if you need them. (Which you should. No one should use the root account for everything)

@scottalanmiller Planning to start it this week.

I'm still finding parts to use. Trying to be as cost conscious as possible as this is only my home lab. (and the significant other gets testy when I want to "buy toys")

      I didn't build it.

Sure... Sure... Blame it on the other guys... If you can't fix it the easy way, at least you have a chance to redo it right. 🙂
