LTO is $8/TB. That would mean a 4TB drive with far better than RDX speed or reliability would need to be $32 for normal sizes and $64 for the biggest on the market. Tape looks to be like 1/10th the cost of drives.

How much does the actual drive cost?

The one big difference is that snowflake firms (or any size) tend to lean towards platform-based, agentless backups while DevOps firms almost never take platform-based backups because they have no need to ever restore a full VM, only the data.

@BRRABill Can't be more than $2!! Right? Memory at that size is so freaking cheap!! Seems like 2GB would be a more logical minimum size.

$2 multiplied by 500,000 units - not going to happen lol

You can easily charge $3 for that kind of upgrade, though!!

Then how do you upgrade them to the WD My Cloud EX5? 😉

Scott - do we know that MS takes backups? and where is the page stating as such (no I haven't looked myself).

@scottalanmiller said in Backup of Office 365 Sharepoint sites:

It is very important to remember that you have outsourced your hosting as well as your reliability and backups. Nothing wrong with taking your own backups, just keep in mind that they are already taking backups and your backups are a third party backup above and beyond the normal backups and a degree of backup that you would never consider (normally) doing if you were not hosted. The desire to take your own backups is generally an emotional one and not one based on actual, statistical risk.

So you're saying that you can call up MS and say - hey I need you to restore all my ODfB account to yesterday because i got hit by Cryptowall - and they will do it?

Doesn't that tool give you version rollback built in?

@JaredBusch Sorry, I've missed the point. You can install VEB in unattended mode thru any distribution solution you have on board. Check this article, however, the problem of configuration remains as it has to be performed manually after the installation

Right now all my production Linux hosts are on VMs so I have snapshots of the backend infrastructure along with application-level backups of data as needed. Mostly these are EC2 instances running WordPress where I have a base AMI ready to go with offsite BackupBuddy backups. It's served me well in the few times I've had to use it - I can go from a launching an instance to all data recovered in about 15 minutes or less.

With that said, I'm really looking forward to seeing how Veeam's Linux backup works once it's released!

I think the final takeaway, especially for non-IT folk, is to move away from a system that requires this sort of backup.

      Ideally, of course.

The age old answer ... "depends"

Those can become coupled if you share accounts. So it is not a panacea.

RPO = Recover Point Objective - How much data do I loose from this moment backward.

      Und? 🙂

@scottalanmiller earlier was mentioning differentials vs incrementals.

I wonder if the terms still apply, or if the industry at large has dropped the two terms and simply moved to the use of incrementals.

Pretty big deal... if you delete a differential nothing bad happens. Delete an incremental and you have a disaster...

Got it solved. I started pointing them at a new server (basically starting from scratch). Still got some inconsistencies but that was resolved by toggling the agent to the new server (after I already pointed it at it). Then I fixed the last couple with a disk allocation mod. What a mind-blowing, super frustrating piece of software.

I use Windows backup for my data and dump it on my NAS... well that was when I had Windows 7.
I might change it now that I'm on Windows 10.

Also, I take a disk level backup with Acronis True Image

Exactly - two 6 TB HDD's may be a lot less expensive, but the performance compared to SSD would be insanely different.

How many HDDs would you need to reach your IOPS requirements?
