pi-hole: Group Management
-
I built a pi-Hole some time back and ended up turning it off as it was causing issues with the Management {spouse}. But as the kids get older, and more junk comes up, I find that I think it's high time in getting one built again.
Installed pi-Hole on a Vultr NJ instance, and already set the basics;
- fail2ban
- glances
- pi-hole
- auto-update
Now - its time to configure more in-depth items; so the Management doesn't flog me with her iPad. Not to mention, I may set this up for some family as well. And well - each will have their own limitations or wishes to allow through that pi-Hole may initially block.
I'm starting my read on it,.. but figured it would be a decent topic to discuss here as well.

Is this even this right way to address this? There are some devices I want less filtering on, and some I want more. Some are behind the ERL - so adding it to the DNS table there is easy, but there are devices behind that ERL that I don't want as much filtering.
I set this up with the idea in mind that I would add other sites to it as well,.. do I set them as Groups also? seems logical at least.

Its really all about how you utilize group assignments.
By default everyone is apart of the Default group and the Ad list is assigned to the Default group.
So to make management happy you would create a Management group, add the Management client address in the Client tab to the Management group and don't assign Management clients to the Default group.
Now you could assign Management to the Default group as well and the use the Domains tab to prevent domains from being filtered.

I just use CloudFlare for families. If I need to, I can change DNS on whatever to view something.

That only blocks malware and porn if you choose to. What about ads, marketing crap, tracking, etc.?

I leverage what's in the browser for that stuff.

That might not be 100% the best way to handle it, but I don' thave to manage and pay for a server to do it.

Yes aaand no.
Plan to add this for family- and by hosting, makes things easier. And only one thing to manage. It’s only a $3.50/month instance. -
