She asked what Hosting was.
Did she setup this site or did she pay someone to do it? If the latter, then pay someone to fix it.
Problem solved.
I didnt ask that question, She said She made a change so one can infer that she build it using the templates provided?
So then she should undo her change and see if the issue is resolved. Otherwise she needs to pay someone for professional assistance.
Regardless or not of if she knows what hosting is or not, that's all sidebar conversation BS. She wants her website fixed, and presumably doesn't know how.

my friend (who is a business owner for her own Eye Lash cosmetic company) is having issues getting to her website
When i put inmyfriendswebsite.com
i get an Index page
like this: https://i.imgur.com/xsUirIW.pngwhen I use
www.myfriendswebsite.com
i goes through.
Weirdly enough it doesn't work for her either way she puts the address in.so ; it's joycelashes.com
Same behaviour here, but now she got some free promotion She will thank you later when her SEO takes off.
So this implies that the configuration file has different entries for www and the default pages. Need to take a quick look there, like the httpd.conf file or the nginx.conf file (more likely the associated conf.d file collection that they pick up). Should be really simple to see that there are two entries and either merge the bad one into the good one, or just copy the good one.
No idea where this is, and she doesn't either..
how does she not know? That's a pretty major problem for a business owner to not know where her own website is!
Actually, that doesn't surprise me in the least. Just because they set it up on SquareSpace doesn't mean they understand it's hosted there, etc. There is so much disconnect - all they know is they log into some website to make updates and it just works... hosting - what the hell is hosting? I just have a website, that's all I know.
No, it does mean that. They had to choose it. That's like saying you went to the parking garage and parked your car there, but didn't know it was parked there. Um... what? She literally had to think "where will I host this", go sign up for hosting, and chose a place that 100% locked in so that every thing she does is focused on their hosting. She can't use WP or whatever, because her hosting determines everything for her. She knew, please don't use the "people are SO dumb" excuse, she didn't want to say, she forgot, whatever, but she's not a complete idiot.
I've known her for Years, and I'll tell you that this never once crossed her mind.
She needed a website and they offered a place to build said website - I also know this because I literally just talked to her and that was one of my questions.
She asked what Hosting was.Scott believes, why I don't understand, that no one is really dumb, that everyone does on one level or another truly does understand this stuff and just instead chooses to be lazy about it instead of finding a good solution. Granted - that does happen often enough... and if you sit down with a person and lead them with the proper questions, they will eventually get to understand why their decisions were poor, but really, until then, they simply never put the thought into it.

I told her what was needed; already said reach out to their support, tell them that this is what's going on and have them fix the issue.

But Will has already said it's likely been broken for a while - perhaps since she first built the site.
going to www.domainname.com was "this is the way" for ages... dropping the www has been a thing for probably 10 years or so now.. and yeah, even google is dropping www from chrome (fucking stupid if you ask me). But just like people who still make RAID 5 because that is what they learned in the 90's and never learned why it's not good now... people still make www websites...

Yeah, SS is her IT in this case.

It's been trendy for well over ten years. It's been a "thing" since DNS was invented.

I'm having a "tearing into vendors" day. Last week I won my court case (small claims) against a towing company and apartment complex that were behaving as predators and towed me illegally. Then I managed to get a predatory medical billing fraudster to back down after two years of trying to scam us.
Dealt with a veterinarian hardware scammer this morning where the vet gave me carte blanche to tear into the vendor for trying to pull a fast one. I'll likely post some of that publicly soon. They basically tried to claim gross incompetence on their own part as an excuse for not doing a good job now to provide support that they sold. And now this encryption scandal that I'm going to be trying to convince customers to talk and go to court.

SquareSpace ad just came up, lol.
-
6,800 unique visitors today! Whoa
-
D&D night here.

@WrCombs someone modified that page today, too. And they are using a litespeed server? Weird. Not bad, just rare.
You'll also want to check any caches. Once fixed, the caches might hold on for a while.
I hadn't heard of Litespeed.
lol
i find that hard to believe

Just very standard IT stuff. Like knowing IIS. You know IIS, presumably. They are about equally as popular.

I'll have to take your word for it - Assuming I have heard about - it was so infrequent and uninspiring that it didn't stick.

There is a group of about 5 "older" ladies wanting to share a few files and documents. One of them has OneDrive but doesn't know how to use it. One has a Gmail account but doesn't know how to use Google Drive, etc. The others have email through their ISP with no "features". I'm thinking a $5 Vultr NC instance would be simple enough for them and probably be plenty of storage. Am I overthinking this? I don't think there is a simple way to share between multiple users with OneDrive, etc. personal accounts. Seems like there would be an easier way. They need simplicity.

What's the difference between NC and OD or GDrive? basically they are all the same.
Why not pick one of the free options and just use that?
Your solution means they have to spend money monthly AND they need support to manage/update/maintain it.

He'd still have to get everyone on the same platform.
-
@Dashrender That is my point. How do multiple users share folders in OneDrive for example? I realize you can send files or a folder to someone on the free tier but they would still have to create [email protected] account to retrieve the file if they were not already a MS user. Same goes with Google users.
-
@DustinB3403 Exactly.
-
@brandon220 your issue is two fold, these 5 people all need to get on something uniform. Sharing from there would all be based on their credentials from said platform.
