The ERX comes with a management interface much like the controller, no?

      No.

Correct, the management interface in the controller is NOTHING like the GUI on the ER-X. It's the Edge Interface.

@brianlittlejohn @JaredBusch @Dashrender so what does the Edge interface look like?

I can't imagine it being so wildly different (outside of the functionality)

So last annoying question (hopefully).. . .

Why does Ubiquiti have so many different products that overlap so much?

Because stupid people buy it. I don't blame them for selling to stupid people that want to give them money.

Simple answer: multiple audiences. Different product lines are geared for different uses.

I never saw the value in the USG. Maybe if you were doing full network automation and copying configs, and then that defeats the purpose of the USG anyway. I have an ERL and an EdgeSwitch Lite at home, along with 2 APs.

What kept you from seeing value in the USG? the price is the only hold back for a small single site SMB. The ER-L and ER-X are just way cheaper.

Is there a way to enable DPI in the controller without USG?

The ER series has it's own DPI.

Right, it is not like the AP is doing DPI.

And neither is the controller in a Unifi Controller setup. It's all in the USG.

@dustinb3403 You don't want a USG. Period. Ever.

                                  It is a gimped ERL.

For personal home use, buy the ERX.

But it lets me manage it with the fancy tools!

The rest of my gear is manageable by Unifi. It's a bit weird my one device that does DPI and edge services isn't.

Ya I wish it would at least send data to the controller. The DHCP service has a spot for it:

but I guess maybe that's just if your APs are DHCP? idk.

That is setting the DHCP option so any UniFi gear you plug in on that DHCP scope will automatically get pointed to the controller.

From that point of view, if that is all you need from the router, the USG is a perfectly valid choice for you.
