The Western Australian government has set itself an ambitious goal of achieving as close to zero data centres as possible through its massive GovNext infrastructure overhaul.
...
At the moment, the WA government supports around 60 data centres and 200 server rooms.
...
Some agencies aren’t even far along the virtualisation path - the Department of Health has 3500 mostly non-virtualised servers.
...
Agencies are being told to “get rid of your garbage” first before they migrate: to review their IT landscape and work out what they need and what they don’t.
The GCIO office wants no zombie apps in the new private clouds.
For those older applications that have proven historically difficult to virtualise, the government is relying on its three infrastructure partners to pressure vendors into helping ‘cloudify’ the software. -
@nadnerB Wow, just your highlights here read like a long nightmare. Only government would assume they could pressure another company into doing something it doesn't want to do. Then 'cloudify' the software, as if that's any different than virtualizing it!

I'm reading this the opposite way. Good for the Western Australian Government. They are focusing on cutting costs and modernizing their infrastructure by cutting out the dead weight and garbage that accumulates when IT departments aren't pushed to modernize.

Yes, that part is good. We'll agree to not talk about when this should have happened. The fact that it is happening is a good thing.

And as if that's any different than not virtualization it. It's really just gibberish.
