You could start right here with a rPi and door sensor.

Waiting for my new Ipad Pro to arrive today!! 12.9" I am super excited to upgrade to the bigger one. We will be traveling in January and February so this will be awesome! Of course I will still be taking my stupid surface with me. But will be using it to run my softphone only
so a $1,200 soft phone, so I don't kill the battery in my phone or Ipad Pro running softphone software all the time.
