Got my old Boxee Box "hacked"/updated with Kodi and Plex client. It's finally useful again and the interface is pretty snappy for an older box.
Now to continue ripping all of my DVDs to my Plex server. This may take a while.
Having seen the setup that @art_of_shred and @Minion-Queen have, I am considering doing the same. The ReadyNAS is already in place and stocked with media.
What do @Minion-Queen and @art_of_shred have?
what's the software package?

It's running Win10, as a player, I know it had VLC as one of two players.. @art_of_shred or @Mike-Ralston would know.
-
It has VLC on it that's it
-
We have a external hard drive connected to it as well. Works great. Most of our movies are on a NAS, ITunes (have an appletv) or Amazon.
-
Win 10 is pretty expensive for that unit considering everything else.

considering everything else. That sums it up. The alternative is free so...

for the $170 that we spent on it. It has been great. It runs what we need really well (we also use it for Pandora and YouTube etc). It's nice to have a full desktop in the living room and makes it easy to watch things from the NAS. I could have put iTunes on it as well but I won the AppleTv so .... might as well use it.

$170 included the OS?
-
Yup the whole thing.

What do @Minion-Queen and @art_of_shred have?
Azulle Quantum Byte Fanless Mini Desktop PC (Windows 10, Intel Atom Z3735F, 2GB RAM+32GB storage)
Like Scott I missed that this included the Windows 10 license as well. that makes this a sweet deal!

So you mentioned a NAS - what are you using for a NAS? And how do you get your data on the NAS? manually copy things there?

We have a WesternDigital https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00I2P56FE/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1
We copy things directly to it as needed. We are in the process of moving our DVD library there.

LOL I moved my DVD library to Vudu, problem (for me) solved, cost $1-2 per disk.
Vudu also allows for offline viewing, you download their app on Windows and then download the movie.
-
We decided to go with local storage. This machine is also a backup target for things here.

Doesn't work well when you have a Roku, but no internet.
My local plex server has been a Godsend a few times.

Bored games are generally well... boring unless you have more than a couple of folks playing, but not too many at once.
