Can't say enough positive stuff about getting an OBD2 reader, they're freaking fantastic.

I drive my poor car so freaking hard and I've had a bad misfire when it gets up to temp that no one has been able to diagnose. In less than 24h owning this widget I discovered it was misfiring on all 4 cylinders when it got hot on a low tank of gas. My theory is that the turbo is boiling the gas return line and it's heating up the tank. When the fuel pump goes to work it's not sending enough pressure (because hot gas / insufficient lube in the pump (gas lubes the pump)).

      TL;DR epic little widget.
I got one at Harbor Freight that has an LCD screen for like $40. I used it a ton on my wife's Jeep Patriot because it sucked. It helped out a lot.

Wow you are overpaying big time for that ODBII sensor unless I am missing something. I got a $20 unit a few years ago and I use it all the time. It uses wifi not bluetooth, but it's amazing all the information it has about my 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee.

I seen some $20 ones out there too. I had not gotten far enough in my research on the subject to know what the differences were.

The $20 ones are passive, but they give you all the information you need and more. You have to the Torque App to use them. I am not sure if an app is required for the one you are looking at.

Speaking of 02 sensors they are the first thing I replace when I get a vehicle. I buy older vehicles and the 02 sensors make a huge mileage and performance difference right off the bat.

For $20, I just bought the one you mentioned. It was linked all over and Amazon prime say it will be here today.

I have an unused Samsung Galaxu S3 that I will try out the CaroO dashcam app on.

Out of curiosity, would a Rasp Pi work for this well enough?

I thought about this, but then I need more pieces.

@JaredBusch You'd really only need 3 pieces right?

The camera, the pi and the ODB2 cable over USB. I think this would likely be a great fit for your needs.

right, but for now, all i will have is the ODB2 sensor and a phone with an app.

You could potentially also get a GPS module and record GPS positions on screen. That would be a cool use as well. Although you could easily do this with a phone too.

That said, I keep wanting to get Pi and build something. So this may well be the thing.

Besides, something designed better would be a great Pi kit. The proprietary stuff on the market now is expensive.

The programming would be cool. It looks like the Pi is powerful enough to do the video encoding too.

FYI @JaredBusch you will need internet access to actually decipher the codes. Of course you could always just google the code on your main phone to get the results.

I'm not after the codes for troubleshooting (as a primary use). I am after dashcam overlay information. Having the ability to see codes for troubleshooting is a bonus to me.

I have always been a fan of dashcams. So much stupid happens on the roads. I am a fairly aggressive driver. But not so much that I weave in traffic. I mean, I speed, basically always. So I certainly do not want it used against me and will not be auto uploading things or anything like that. Especially with ODB II info embedded on the video.

So you want to be able to record what you're doing in the event of a car wreck etc.

I thought about it for a while, and opt'd against having one. Most of my driving experiences are boring so yeah.

Plus it's admissible evidence against you should you find your self talking to the law...
