@DustinB3403 Oracle VM Server seems to be Xen, not XenServer.

yes, always has been. Oracle VM predates XenServer.

So the boss just asked me to investigate Oracle VM Server, which is (from a very preliminary search) to be a Fork of Xen Server.

It's an ancient competitor to XenServer. It's not "bad" but even talking about it is just silly.

What is going on there? Did you just hire some Oracle fanboy?

Why would you get Xen from a third party when XenServer comes from the people who make it?

I know of no upsides to Oracle VM. It's from a time period where different factors existed. It exists today only to service customers already stuck on it.

@travisdh1 thank you, I just type Xen server instinctively.

@scottalanmiller no Oracle is calling my boss trying to get their foot in the door. I mentioned the very same thing you mentioned, why go to a third party for something we already have.

I also mentioned that we already have Xen installed, and configured and it's worked great so far besides the array crashing because of a bad disk.

And then it was mentioned "yeah but that's just VM's this is servers" So I replied "a VM is a VM, lets do a test and export one of our Hyper-V VM's and import it into Xen and see how it runs since it runs horribly at the moment anyways"

            He said that sounds great!

            Of course we're on Hyper-V 08 and I can't export a running VM!

Why would he accept that call? I mean that honestly, what crazy situation would have him talk to them?

Totally random people just got my number and tried to sell me stuff. Huh, I think the company that I work for should spend time and money investigating products we would never have considered before just because I like the sales guy more than the company I'm paid to protect from sales guys.

That's the mental conversation I imagine going on leading to this.

I got a spam email from someone trying to sell me raw lumber or something useless to me this morning. I deleted it instead of researching if I had a use for raw lumber. Right now your boss in investing company resources in trying to aid Oracle.

At least Oracle VM isn't that bad, it's just a silly thing to be discussing.

Should we be deploying RHEL 3 today?

For what it's worth, I completely agree'd with everything said here about it, why do it? There would be no gain etc.

                            It's all in the OP.

Because it is old and pointless, just like Oracle VM is now.

No, the RH series was spent and replaced by the RHEL series. So RHEL 5 is a full five generations after the RH series died off. And RH 5 was nowhere near the end of the line.

The latest Red Hat Linux release was Red Hat Linux 9 in early 2003. Thirteen years ago!
