      Question would you use the EdgeSwitches everywhere? or just at the core of the network.

      I need to replace some un-managed dumb switches with managed to deploy some VLAN stuff. But would you use a EdgeSwitch or stick with something like a Netgear L2+ Managed switch (that is more or less same price?)

        Before you buy new switches.... why are you deploying VLANs?

          @scottalanmiller Long story 🙂
          Yes I know the in's and out's of VLAN's.

          Mainly being used as we were running out of IP's on the 10.0.1.0/24 range thanks to mobile devices and increasing number of employee's. We can't increase the subnet as we already have 10.0.2 10.0.3 etc assigned to other locations, that are connected via MPLS. So it was decided before I started here that the network be split into 3, 10.0.1.X for Management and devices, 172.18.0.X for Guest WiFi, 172.22.0.X for company wifi devices.

          So I know it's not the best use of VLAN's but it's the best solution at the moment until I can re-plan and redesign the whole network everywhere.

              EdgeSwitches are access switches, not core switches. You would normally not use them at the core, they are for end devices to attach to.

                Since they've entered the space I've always wondered why they offer 10 different devices meant for the network edge, but just 2 switches? I guess the switch ecosystem is probably just that much harder to disrupt like they have with the other devices they offer.

                  @travisdh1 probably true.

                    How many SMBs really need a core switch?

                    While I call the switch that my servers and firewall hang off of the core switch, it really doesn't need to be much if any better than the typical edge switches we talk about around here most often.

                    Unless I'm missing something?

                      Mostly only caused by physical constraints. Size alone would never do it in the SMB. Pure size almost no SMB even leaves the "single stack" world.

                          We run HP in all customers. Very happy, easy interface and powerful. 1920's are cheap and nice for SMB.
                          I avoid Netgear, we sold 2 units about 6 years ago in 2 different customers, and network hangs in two each. I decided to leave them. They changed units for another model but a lot of time spent.
                          TPLink is beginning to work in enterprise line. What do you think about Jetstream line?

                              The demo model worked amazingly well, about to order another 3, replace their current hardware for them.
