The Acer S7 is 2.87 Lbs

Throw in a USB 3.0 BluRay player that you can just tuck in your bag and be golden.

We certainly are not traveling around the world with things on discs. This isn't the 1990s. We are purely online content.

I'm pretty sure you said you weren't a fan of Acer but.... here

With its RAID 0 Solid State Drive, the Aspire S7 reacts up to twice as fast as laptops with normal SSDs.

And will lose data faster if something happens.

If they both have iPads - why get a Kindle Fire?

They are 4 and 6. And they are big time gamers.

The Chromebooks are actually more portable than the iPads.

Same size and weight but less fragile.

Chromebooks don't play games. All games will be on the Steam Machine and the Yoga 2.

I tend to have a lot of backup gadget devices with me. Typically N*2 where N is amount of kids in a family.

A must for the full time traveller, there are some really slick LiPo packs on ebay these days.

I'm working on a project to build my own, but I prefer 18650's as I get them for free.

Batteries are tough for us because of the continuous issues with weight. It's not just that we don't want to carry any more, which we don't, but also that we are loaded right to the airline weight restrictions every time.

It might be worth it to add one extra bag that you have to pay for to allow you 50 extra lbs of stuff. Since you're flights are limited (so it seems) to 2-4 times a year, that extra expense seems worth it to me.
