Binding them is easier now that it used to be, but if your current system is working... why fix what's not broke?

That is generally my line of thought. However, I was wondering if it is a best practice thing and if there was something I hadn't considered as a benefit.

In a sense, I think joining to a domain becomes a necessary evil. There are obvious access and control benefits, but at the cost of added complexity and security risk. If the Macs are set up in such a way as to be happy where they are, why introduce the security risk? Is there any real gain from being on AD that you are feeling pain from not currently having?

I was not aware of a security risk by joining them to the domain. How does it increase risk?

I am trying to ascertain if there is something that is missing from them not being bound to AD. Are there ADMX templates for GPO?

    • Buying a New Car

I am looking to trade-in my 2007 Subaru STi and use the money as a down payment on a 2019 STi. Historically, they don't offer finance promos on this car because it is a "boutique" car and in high demand. However, I think that since the overall new car market is soft right now, the manufacturer is offering 1.9%, which is lower than any local credit union, let alone major bank. The financing promo ends on Feb 28th. They may renew it, they may not. They may also increase the rate to the 2s or higher and then I would get a loan at high 2s from my credit union.

I am trying to decide what to do, as my current car has an exhaust leak that just started last week and has some oxidized paint on the rear spoiler and the rear windshield tint is bubbling and needs to be redone. I have been planning on fixing the tint and paint prior to getting rid of it, but I just don't know how much time it will take, and if the amount of money the dealership would give me for it would be worth the cost and hassle of fixing the cosmetic issues.

One scenario I was thinking was that I could just get the new car and front myself the cash for the down of say 14K and then sell/trade in my current one after fixing the cosmetic issues to pay myself back. Then I thought about the fact that my CD and high yield savings account rates are more than the loan amount, so I would be losing money by making a large down payment. I just don't like the idea of that large of a car payment.

Anyway. What do you guys and gals think?

    • RE: Sophos or WebRoot Cloud Endpoint Advanced - Any Thoughts???

I hope their (Sophos') endpoint software is better managed than their UTM software has been this past year. Several updates have broken some pretty important things. I have 4 pending updates because I don't see a resolution to some of the items. One update fixes something, then breaks 2 more things. The next update doesn't even address some of the issues that were broken by previous updates.

I had a cheap subscription to webroot for my personal desktop and am looking for another "sale". I installed sophos free endpoint on my parent's pcs and they haven't been having any related issues or malware infections.

@bnrstnr said in Buying a New Car:

Definitely don't trade it in. You'll get ripped off. You're almost always better off selling it privately (here in MI, anyway). Unless, of course, your car is worth less than like $2000 and the dealer is offering $2000 guaranteed... I doubt that's the case though.

Yeah, it is definitely worth more than that and I know trade-in is lower. I just hate the hassle of having to deal with flakes and jackasses that aren't serious and just want to joy ride. Where I am from, it is easier to say who isn't a flake than who is.

      We'll see.

      @hobbit666 I love rats nests.

Just randomly pulling cables until someone screams is the best!

Pretty much what we did 🙂
had some pings going to the mill equipment. Pulled one cable out and checked what IP stopped 🙂

Then i labelled the cables up that i could

I have had similar rats nests here. If the switches are managed, you should be able to checkout the arp tables and match them up to the mac addresses of the equipment you have connected. Takes a little longer if you have the info and capabilities, but it is less disruptive.

OK. I was getting worried because that was my understanding and I am almost done filling out the MS audit spreadsheet. I haven't had more than 2 CPUs on any host, so that part hasn't applied to me. That is interesting (and annoyingly convoluted), though.

Patches aren't done in a vacuum so it is what it is. We will have to see how MS handles it. The O365 clients updating has mostly been OK since 2013. Windows 10 has been hit and miss.

I just don't see them seeing it as the serious business tool that it used to be.

Holy cow - crazy thought - What if MS is doing this on purpose to drive people away from Windows on the desktop? If they consider Windows on the desktop as a money loss, or even if it's just a money break even, it's probably not worth keeping around. Nadella has been pushing like mad to have everything in the cloud.
