I have enjoyed the past 10months and not thinking about computers.

Sorry to hear about your decision. Although, from the above quote it does sound like it might be the right move. I have thought long about going back to construction but the market here isn't what it should be and I'd be taking a serious pay cut.

I was looking at it more. It would seem he (my alum) works with\for Microsoft. I wasn't sure which part of the team he was on. I was just looking at placing a Kali build in a cloud instance then I saw this.

Vultr would work too, and be cheaper.

I'm don't use Azure or Vultr(tho I did take look at the latter the other day). I have systems running with profit bricks. I'm working on migrating more of my servers to Linux based systems.

Test out Vultr, it's cheap and good.
Thank you. I will take a deeper dive, I looked from the surface.

So nothing worked when you powered down the physical server?

What IP are the PCs using for DNS?
What IP is the VM Domain Controller using for DNS?

If the PCs are using the turned off server as their primary DNS, they may not ever flip to the secondary (which is hopefully your VM DC)
If the VM DC is not pointing to either 127.0.0.1 or it's own IP for the primary (and we assume there are no other DNS servers on this network for this domain) that would also make everything stop working.

I get the feeling that "and nothing of value was lost" is appropriate.

      I'm guessing that is right!

First thing I would have done is turn on the hotspot on my phone and tried to connect the printer to that WiFi.

I hadn't planned on that method exactly... but it's a good quick idea. I had brought a different switch\router along for the ride.
