You know in movies when people do a 180 in their car and then as they pull away they fishtail? It is a classic movie car chase bit. I did that this morning on the ice, it was lots of fun.

@Texkonc Cheaper than an outage for sure. With 2 million log files (2.2TB of logs/1024kB each) if this exchange server has something go wrong it will be very hard to to get it all working again.

    • Security Incident Response

Hi all just a quick question.
I need to fill out a basic questionnaire for an RFP. The customer wants(among other things):
"Describe your security incident response procedures"
My assumption is they want to know what happens if we get hacked/breached, what our response would be.
Rather than just filling out "Call a professional security response company" I feel something else needs to be there.
      Also,
"Indicate your company's information encryption level for data at rest and data in motion"
We arent using Bitlocker or LUKS. SMB shares dont have encryption enabled due to it requiring smb3 and the disabling of smb1, which may have an effect on non windows machines to connect to the smb shares

    • RE: RAID 5 URE Clarity Question

      @tim_g

Instead of rolling six sided dice:
During a rebuild after failed drive in a 6 drive RAID 5 array you have 5 dice with 10^14 sides each. One of the sides on each of these dice has a skull and crossbones. You roll all 5 of these dice thousands of times a second until the rebuild is complete. Just one of those dice on any roll during the operation required to rebuild needs to stop on skull and crossbones. Skull and crossbones wont come up right away, but given enough rolls it will. The number of dice rolls to rebuild is a function of array size and rebuild rate. Rebuild rate is the same for the RAID 5 set in question(whatever it is, is the same whether the array is 1TB or 1000TB). Higher array size = more chance of skull and crossbones. The relationship isnt linear, but the longer you dont land on skull and crossbones the higher the chance you will in the future.

Now i am going to go design a DnD ruleset with 10^14 sided dice.

    • RE: What Are You Doing Right Now

@wrx7m Does your ERP run 40 year old cobol base? Does the 'server' merely host file shares of text files that have to be downloaded to each client? Do the clients run the queries and display results, rather than the server doing the work in a real database? Does the single thread performance of your client machines determine the speed of the application? Does your ERP require each client to download thousands of dll files every time it is updated?
You likely answered no to all of these questions, so your ERP not as bad as could be.

    • Catastrophic network gear failure yesterday

Middle of day yesterday, i am talking to my boss and all of a sudden everything stops working instantly. Go in server room, see two of my 3 Cisco switches rebooting. Then rebooting, then rebooting...
      Got home after midnight.
Need to buy some new switches.
Why are Ubiquiti switches so much less expensive than Dell HP Cisco?
Am I missing something here? I can get 3 of
Ubiquiti Networks 48-Port UniFi Switch, Managed PoE+ Gigabit Switch with SFP, 500W (US-48-500W
for the same price as one HP Dell or Cisco switch with similar features.
Do i have to buy subscription service or install a vm to manage these?

These arrived an hour ago. Racked.
I downloaded the firmware, then hit Begin Transfer.
Still waiting, i assume this is normal as others say updates take awhile.
