I learned Hyper-V inside and out when I was studying for my MCSA 2012. I have given up on Hyper-V. Other Hypervisors are so much better and have less issues. I tried using Hyper-V for about a year, it just isn't as good as other products out there.

In what ways? and at what scale?

For starters the compatibility with non-Windows Machines suck.

Something custom certainly would do this easily. Of the shelf, I can't think of something that would work, but I can't quite picture your workflow, either.

I have a number of things that I have to track for every employee (only 50 employees right now), all of them required by some level of government compliance. Many of them require documentary evidence, while others would simply be a date. Others would require both. Workflow is something that is more random aside from new employee starts as it would be based on need rather than a schedule.

Are these like PDFs? If so, Sharepoint or Alfresco are best. If it is just data, a quick web front end to a database might be best.

They are PDFs, but I don't think Sharepoint will work. I believe I need to be able to build relationships between my tables. Sharepoint is very flat, and there is little to no relationship between two lists. At the most basic level I could probably do it. I could do it in Excel for that matter, but it isn't designed for it.

Maybe I'm not communicating as clearly as I think I am...

I'd like a means to track all my employee information. This includes PII, numerous forms (PDF), and date/check boxes. I'd rather not make a non-normalized, scroll-forever-to-the-right list or spreadsheet. If I were to build this in Access I would have several tables on the backend linked relationally, and then use a form with several tabbed subforms as my interface.

Does that clear things up at all?

You can have multiple lists and build relationships via a higher level if you wanted. But that seems like a lot of work.

@scottalanmiller I was referring to @thwr and how in Germany an internship requires the professor to go to the place of internship to witness what the intern is learning.

And how I very highly doubted that occurs in the US.

It does for real internships, for the most part. MCC definitely followed up on mine.

Our local community college, a SUNY school, did some fairly extensive followups during internships. Mine was pretty hectic including an hourly log, daily and weekly reports, and a final cap stone to finish it all off. I wasn't alone either as other people on other internships had the same requirements.

@thwr said in Muting or ignoring threads:

That's a very important feature in case ML is getting bigger. It should default to no alerting at all but let you subscribe to some threads. Exactly like SW. Everything else is a notification overkill.

I think that it does that. Both let you turn on subscribe by default or subscribe manually only.

Did you change the new user default notification to be off? At one point the default for new users was on.

Default is currently email responses to subscribed threads, same as Spiceworks. Uses can manually change it to whatever they want. And they can change how subscribes work. Right now, if you respond to a thread, you get subscribed.

My feeling on that is that it is important for casual or new users to have it like that or they post and forget and they don't realize that we have responded or can't find their thread again. Those that are around a lot can easily make the change and customize.

I'm certainly open to other ideas, but I've thought about this around expectation and practicality and it seems like getting responses by default for new users is important.

      Thoughts?

You probably need to be sure of the voltage coming into whatever it is you need that for... Don't want to hook it up to a PDU putting out 208V if you only have a 110V device.

Bahaha yeah really. Ours is 208v. 240v is more common than 220v though.

Hoeveer most devices are ranging from 100-250v on Switch mode power supplies.

What do the logs say about the system going down? I'm guessing that it is going down for whatever reason there is then a RAID issue.

I've also been looking at PowerBroker Identity Services from BeyondTrust. It is where Likewise ended up after a series of acquisitions. It looks like I'm going to have to be building a virtual network and trying some of this.

I've used this in multiple companies, from an airline in America to an oil exploration company.

Works like a champ, it's built on Winbind, but now has actual support versus calling RedHat and hoping for the best.

Did you use PBIS Open or the paid version? The paid version is significantly more than I can afford at about $1,600 per server instance.

This was back in the Likewise days. So free.99.

I don't know. I ended up setting up the necessary VMs on other hosts and started rebuilding this one since it has been having stability issues in the last few weeks.

Ah okay, probably best but it is nice when you can figure out what happened, just to know what it was 😞
