RE: THANKS TO YOU: Nextcloud 9 is here - and all open source, now and in the future!
@travisdh1 yeah, it will take some time, but not long. 2 pieces are in already, 3rd is nearly done (theming) and we will have Shibboleth done soon, too. Doing it in the open brings real benefit in terms of speed and quality, Jan blogged about that: https://nextcloud.com/why-open-source-rocks/

RE: THANKS TO YOU: Nextcloud 9 is here - and all open source, now and in the future!
@LukasReschke talks about security work done for #nextcloud 9 - good stuff and reason to migrate.

@coliver said in THANKS TO YOU: Nextcloud 9 is here - and all open source, now and in the future!:
Will we see things like the SSO login plugin be moved to open source as well?
ABSOLUTELY. Everything!

RE: THANKS TO YOU: Nextcloud 9 is here - and all open source, now and in the future!
Nextcloud 9 is fully compatible with ownCloud 9 - it is a fork and, you know, we wrote it
It uses the ownCloud app store for now. We'll probably release our enterprise apps there, too, the coming weeks. Let's see

RE: HUGE news: Nextcloud future of ownCloud!
So, the big news is: we moved our release from early July to TODAY.
And we will NOT be doing any proprietary code, all 'enterprise' functionality will become available, fully open source, the coming weeks. Yay

RE: Microsoft to buy LinkedIn for $26.2 billion!
Twitter is full of hilarious comments, btw. Among the best are the ones like this:
EXCLUSIVE: Microsoftβs Satya Nadella accidentally acquired LinkedIn as he tried to delete his account. -
THANKS TO YOU: Nextcloud 9 is here - and all open source, now and in the future!
Thank you to everybody who helped: Nextcloud 9 is out. This was only possible thanks to the overwhelmingly positive response we got and the many contributors who immediately got involved! We are grateful for the help and promise: we'll stay true to you and open source!
That means: NO proprietary apps, no separate 'enterprise' functionality. Everything open, free, and ready for you to make a difference.
And as a taste, Nextcloud 9 introduces upload-only shares and enterprise-grade logging. Just for you.
See the announcement and get migrated now!
If you want to help: sharing this on social media is SUPER helpful. So is sending it to press or submitting it to forums everywhere. Make a difference and help people on a well maintained, more secure solution for their file share and sync needs!

RE: HUGE news: Nextcloud future of ownCloud!
Guys, good discussion. I don't want to comment on the ownCloud side of things, that's up to them.
If you have questions about us, our goals, our roadmap - yes, watch the video of the hangout Frank and myself did, that's a good one. And on https://nextcloud.com/news are blogs apearing from our employees who share their ideas - ideas we want to get input on and discuss.
We've just started 2 days ago so it will take at least until next month before we can release anything. It will be a drop-in replacement to ease migration and upgrade. After that - well, we have big plans of course.
We are growing our engineering team, many are going to join us the coming months (in germany you have a 1 or 2 month notice time so people working at other companies often take some time to join). We are obviously also looking to hire sales, marketing, support and other people a company needs. Some we have or will join soon but more is welcome and if you're interested in a job at a cool open source company, let us know!

HUGE news: Nextcloud future of ownCloud!
Nextcloud is out! Today we announce the news many of you have been waiting for: the future of private file sync and share! See our blog post.
In short, the core ownCloud contributors are forking into Nextcloud, kickstarting a new company. We'll develop a drop-in replacement with added security and stability fixes for home users, and will throw in Spreed.ME integration. Spreed.ME is secure, private video conferencing software, open source of course. We're becoming a single company, pushing a single, awesome product
For enterprise users - we'll also offer a drop-in replacement for the Enterprise Edition and offer a subscription. Whatever happens, we'll take care of users, both home and enterprise. Info on this page.
I know, big move. No need to make hasty decisions, we want to make this as smooth as possible but as with LibreOffice or MariaDB there will be a transition period. You can stay with ownCloud for now until we've released our replacement and just see what happens. We're not out to destroy ownCloud, after all - we ARE ownCloud. We're essentially doing a reboot, and many employees are either on board, talking to us or invited to join.
The why, how, what - there's more info on my private blog too.

Urgent security update for ownCloud users
A mediaelement.js security vulnerability affects older #ownCloud versions, upgrade now!
ownCloud 9 is safe, we did some security hardening which catches this one.

ownCloud client 2.2 is out ;-)
This release now notifies you of what's happening on the server (new shares, maintenance window etc) and when syncing of a file was problematic. And it's faster and more reliable, so get it!

RE: ownCloud warnings
@JaredBusch yeah, but the warning about the internet connection still has the old wording, that one - the discussion isn't finished, it seems.
Not sure what the fedora/RH thing shows or what is/isn't wrong. We did drop support for Fedora but the owncloud-files.noarch package should work almost everywhere and on any version of RH/Fedora/CentOS/etc

RE: ownCloud 9.0.2 Released
on ownCloud 8.2, PHP 7 is supported but not all apps can work with it. On 9.x, things should be good.

RE: Installed the ownCloud Debian packages? Here is how to move to a newer version!
On a different note, we now have Ubuntu 16.04 packages in testing for the client and stable for the server

Installed the ownCloud Debian packages? Here is how to move to a newer version!
ownCloud will no longer be in newer Debian releases so it's good to move to upstream packages. That's not entirely trivial so we wrote a how-to blog.
Hope it helps, and feedback welcome!

RE: Mark Shuttleworth on No Compromises in Ubuntu Security
Hmmm, if he cares so much about security he should disable the Universe repository, it's full of security holes. Essentially, installing anything from there is an exercise in installing a backdoor.
Of course, there's not much choice, you want that software to be available. Though choice

RE: ownCloud 9.0.2 Released
Hi all,
We have indeed made available maintenance releases for all our supported releases. It is highly recommended to upgrade to benefit from the security and stability improvements. Learn more in the blog
Sadly the VM's aren't updated yet so I didn't announce until yesterday. But it isn't clear when VM's come so - it is out now
Our iOS client also was updated!
In other news, the ImageTragick security vulnerability can affect ownCloud installations. We strongly recommend to check your setup and take action if you need to, steps detailed here.
Thanks and take care!

RE: Obsolete Cipher Suite Message
This is essentially telling you that the encryption your browser negotiated with the website in question is getting old - it might not yet have been compromised but the general confidence in its protection is quite low and you should avoid using it for things where you really need to be certain of the protection encryption offers.
Say you download software and you need to be sure it ain't compromised - take this warning serious. Not as home user, probably, unless you are banking (your bank REALLY ought to use newer ciphers). But as business - it isn't unreasonable to kick Microsoft for this, you're downloading software from their site.
