@scottalanmiller how would you update and install packages without dnf, I use Ubuntu and would be weird if they removed apt...

Ubuntu is headed in the same directly. You'd use SNAP instead of APT. But how it handles things like the kernel, I've no idea.

This process is only for applications. I would assume that you still use apt or dnf for system updates.

There is no apt or dnf... to get updates for the OS, you can run: rpm-ostree upgrade

Name put aside, it's just what I've known it as, I also use ISPconfig on another VPS, I think both web panels just work and have no issues with either.. I've used cpanel/whm many times in the past and quite like cpanel but just chosen to use what I use, obviously if you don't want to worry about updating your VPS and don't want the hastle then just use regular web hosting.. I'm just stating what I use in the thread and by no means giving advice to use what I use.

We moved all the way from ASO to paneless because we found it to be the least effort. The panel seems to create more effort than it removes. For us at least.

Seems really interesting with the monitoring and the ability to have custom alerts.

@FATeknollogee How has the testing been going?

Haven't done much more than my OP.
I plan to do some more testing over the weekend.
My main goal is to find a ScreenConnect replacement.

@fateknollogee said in SaltStack setup for /etc/hosts:

I remember this has been discussed on the forums sometime back when...

I'd like to have a master host file & push this out to Linux & Windows servers & desktops.

Anyone have a good how to guide?

One more thing, you'll want to use file.managed in a State file.

That way, you keep a master copy on Git and only need to edit that. Saltstack will take care of the rest and make sure all minions have that updated file.

Otherwise, with salt-cp, you have to manually SSH to the salt-master server and run the command. I'd rather just update the file in VSCode, then be done with it...

In your State file, you can do Linux and Windows using an If statement, having it do it one way for each OS.

      I use grains, os_family, etc.

@phlipelder said in Use Hyper-V to replicate Linux vm file share:

Hyper-V Replica would work in this situation with a few caveats.

There is a 15 second limit on replication cycles. If the VMs are running database/active services this could be a problem.

That would be handled earlier in the process by the backup job. If the backup is good, the replication won't cause an issue. If the backup is bad, the replication can't fix it, of course, but will replicate the bad backup. But the only place that this can be addressed is in the backup step, the replication is of backup files, so not at a point in the process where it matters.

"Garbage in garbage out" never seems to go away. It's been the bane of our existence since the switch to image/block based backups. :S

File backups suffered from this, too. Databases are just hard to back up.

@fateknollogee said in NFS Server...what to build??:

      HW is simple:

2x SSD for o/s 4 - xx SSD for NFS shares

Why would you have drives for the OS? This both breaks standard storage practices AND assumes a physical install which is a 'no no'.

Why would you assume a physical install ?
I'm installing the hypervisor (in this case FC28) on a Raid1 array of 2x SSDs

Because you stated a dedicated array for the OS, not for the hypervisor. I'm only going by what you wrote. If you wanted dedicated for the OS, you'd need it whether you had a hypervisor or not.

Understood. Next time, will be more specific

Since that's a lot of money to spend just for a hypervisor that isn't used, it seems much more rational to use it for an OS than a hypervisor. It's not that there is truly zero value to a dedicated HV array, but it is nearly zero. SSDs, even cheap consumer ones, aren't free. But the value is so low, they'd basically have to be.

I don't have experience with that particular brand but have used Intels NUCs in a number of different applications.

I think the CPU is too weak on that one. Intel have a couple of NUC models that are priced similarly and some with bundled Win10 and memory / HDD so I would have a look at those. Look for instance at the older model with the J3455 cpu.

They do for snapshotting. ZFS is reference on write. I think btrfs is the same. Then you need to compress and export snapshots.

Yeah I think that's what this addresses...

Also I feel like the most popular instructions were a blog post, rather than official documentation.

I'm not even sure they have a dedicated techwriter. This is why it is better to just follow the official RHV docs. You'll have to filter out the Red Hat specific details, like subscription-manager, but you'll definitely have a better experience

Adding this line (suggestion by Squeakz on #ovirt IRC) fixed the issue.
Each host has 4 nics, I only made the change on the first nic. When I tried on all 4 nics, none of them worked after reboot..

      NM_CONTROLLED=no

My point exactly. Get Network Manager out of the equation on CentOS, things always start working.

      Server is Lenovo RD640
      o/s: Fedora 27
      installed kernel: 4.13.9.300

Tried upgrading to 4.14.8-300...the system gets to the grub screen where I can see both available kernels...screen goes black...after waiting a few minutes, I ctrl-alt-del, reboot, choose 4.14..9-300

Anyone have a Lenovo server with upgraded kernel?

I've experienced the boot issue while using 4.14.11, I had to turn off Kernel Page Table Isolation (KPTI).
