I hope this isn't TekSystem's cause I'm getting ready to contract some remote work to them haha.

There are other providers who can do work remotely 😉

A friend of mine made this ages ago:

      uploadr.eu

HTTPS, files expire/delete after 48 hours, 1 GB limit, if you give an email address you get more but it's not used for marketing or any of that fun.

I could, but I feel they're generally all the same, so it would be a waste of time. Better to accept that VARs don't add value, and just do my own research. The cost (in terms of my time) of finding a good VAR, or a good vendor, outweighs any benefits I'm likely to get.

      Just to throw something in.

A good relationship with a supplier can make all the difference, for example with Ubiquiti gear.

Supplier A said the item was in stock.
Supplier A was wrong, their website listed it as in stock for next day delivery, when I ordered it, 6 week lead time.
Supplier B is better and the stock system updates automatically with the website.

Little things like that make the difference.

I have no idea what you're talking about? Windows machines, that are locked down by IT, ie, users not installing crap, really don't give any any problems.

But Windows has to be guarded by IT, it is not designed to be safe, that's why.

Setup 2 identical hardware systems, one with Windows 10, one with Linux and give them to the same user. They will break Windows 10 quicker than they will break Linux, no IT hand-holding or management.

    • RE: Windows 10 Replacement for Movie Maker

I don't think new apps that appear now are going to support Firewire from a camera, everything is USB/SD card based these days.

I'm guessing you are using a DV tape based camera?

You could look into a video interface card for your PC, then connect the camera to that interface so you can record the output of the camera into the PC as a digital file, then ingest into your editor of choice.

      @Carnival-Boy

I think I'm going to use Google Drive and give anyone access who has the link. That should be secure enough.

Personally, I'd upload to youtube, set the video to unlisted, then they can watch on mobile/PC/etc without needing to download files.

    • RE: BackBlaze vs. CrashPlan

      Hi.

I looked at CrashPlan and BackBlaze years ago.

CrashPlan, I dropped because of the requirement for Java on the end clients. It might be the most amazing tool in the world but Java sucks, so when choosing which to go for, I went with BackBlaze.

I've got people using the home & business backup of Backblaze, no problems or complaints so far. For 1-2 years now.

By default, the Backblaze client throttles it's own speed, but in the client you can turn off the throttle and let it use as much as you want if you prefer. So if speed of upload is a concern, have a look in the client settings.

@dafyre said in BackBlaze vs. CrashPlan:

Does the Backblaze backup client have the option to back up to a local drive or a USB drive as well as to your servers?

Nope, the BackBlaze client is there purely to upload & download from BackBlaze servers. Which I prefer because it means their focus is on making that feature work rather than other bits.

I wonder if @aaron and @ChristopherBB have relayed on the Java issue to BB? I'm sure product teams would love to hear that them avoiding Java and using a native tool set alone is a cause for customer acquisition. That's a metric or anecdote that they would love to have in their collection, I'm sure.

No no. They use it on their marketing already 🙂

      https://www.backblaze.com/cloud-backup.html
      Native Software
Java is responsible for 91%* of security attacks. Backblaze's code is native to Mac and PC and doesn't use Java.

Do I want to support a company who does not use Java? Absolutely. Until CrashPlan changes their app, they won't get clients from my end.

Yeah, I don't understand why Windows 7/8.1 machines appear as Apple Mac Devices in Spiceworks and asking for SSH credentials.

Lots of weird issues on 3 different sites, so I wrote it off all together.

If I need on-going monitoring and management, LanSweeper.

      For manual inventory, Stripe IT.

For inventory combined with helpdesk, FreshService. Though not used it in production for awhile.

Yeah. been a user for 3 years now.

Really great product, rock solid, very light on performance hogging, fast data capture and accurate error messages if it can't get the data, it's also incredibly cheap compared with other options out there.

Why a soft phone on a desktop? Why not on a smartphone? 🙂 Then I can take it with me. I use this all the time, really useful when out and about.

I still have a Polycom physical phone for my desk, the click to dial and other features are just handy.

As for the bankend, there are a huge number of options. Just beware of the resellers.

Though do they have to then check each profile? I'm thinking more of a "Click here" for this expertise and all the members with that expertise are listed quickly.

    • RE: AmpLifi

For me, I'd prefer wifi to EOP. It's random based on the wiring of the building how good or bad it might be.

      @DustinB3403 said in AmpLifi:

@johnyog Those are just power injectors. You'd still have to power the Ubiqiti devices with "PoE" as they don't have a separate power port (at least from what I've seen).

No...Those are Ethernet Over Power adapters. Not Power over Ethernet Injectors 🙂

"Use your existing electrical wiring to extend your Internet access to any room in your house. Just plug the Powerline 1200 into any electrical outlet then plug in your new network connection. It's that easy. With a 1200Mbps speed and Beamforming, the Powerline 1200 is perfect for connecting smart TVs, streaming players, and game consoles. Plus the extra outlet provides power for additional devices."

It uses your electrical wiring for networking with those point to point plugs.

@Jason but didn't we just agree the DVD is now the backup? The only reason I did it was because we don't have computers with DVD drives anymore.

Will only one person at a time be watching the video? Or can multiple people watch that copy at once on your network share.

The proof is in who can access the data.

If the data sits on my personal "server" and I am the only one to access it, that's a digital backup for me. If the data sits on a server where multiple people can access it, that's different.

      @aaronstuder said

No you buy a license for that kind of purpose.

That's no problem here, our license allows for anyone working for the company to view it.

Cool. Ask the company who supplied it to you for a digital copy. 🙂

Does anyone know what setting controls this so I can turn it off?

Seen this before. It's a "feature" for Windows 10 to auto install the printers and drivers. I can't remember where I've seen the setting but this happens on home systems too.
