But the question remains, are you forced to use it as a DC?

What's the problem? Just put the workstation groups on different vlans and route their traffic differently. Block either in firewall, http proxy or dns.
Exactly what I am thinking even if it is Squid. @CCWTech what firewall do you have?

Another company follow up while I'm thinking about them. Their social media has remained totally silent since Feb 4th. And their blog that was always a twice weekly thing has been silent since a few days before that. The news reports definitely continue to seem to have been real, contrary to what they stated.
Goes to their blog one week before the compromise.
The title of the article is correct. Just remove the dash
Oh now that is funny crap!

RE: Exploring VitalPBX
I have been told that this is in progress ETA end of the month (hopefully) if not end of Sept.

Server with multiple backplane / Drive Configuration
I have a server that will have 6 SSD drives (RAID5) and 4 HDD's (RAID 10)
There are two backplanes with a capacity of 8 drives each.
Does it matter if drives are split between backplanes?
For example:
Backplane 1: 6 SSD's and 2 HDD's
Backplane 2: 2 HDD'sOr is it better to keep all like drives (or drives in same array) on the same backplane?
Example:
Backplane 1: 6 SSD's and 2 empty spots
Backplane 2: 4 HDD's with 4 empty spotsI'm thinking it doesn't matter as they are all on the same RAID card, but wanted to verify.

My vote would be to follow your example of keeping each array together on the backplane, not sure if it's going to make a difference but that's my gut.
You're inevitably going to get a question / inquisition on why R5 on the 6 SSDs so.... counting down .... 3..... 2...... 1.....
Sure, my answer would be why not RAID 5?
(RAID 5 on spinning drives is a bad idea, but since SSD's are completely different RAID 5 on an SSD array is just fine.) -
Joining 2 Windows 10 Machines
I have a client who has two PC's. He wants to move what's on the HDD of one PC to the 2nd PC and just dual boot Windows.
I know you can dual boot OS but not sure how to join two different OS's on one drive. Both are Windows 10.
Anyone?

@CCWTech what it doesn't tell you is if the 12th user will cost zero, $200, $2000... no idea.
Some good news. I just had a user on the RepairShopr FB page tell me he has 16 users and it's actually $20.00 per user per month not $200.00.
I can't be the only person who has noticed this. Very odd for them to have a typo like this.
-
RE: MSP Helpdesk Options
From RepairShopr:
"Thank you for using RepairShopr.
The correct amount is $110/year per additional user.
I have documented the issue and forwarded it to the development team to look further into why the Add a Paid User page is showing $220/month.
The Buy Credits / Add Ons "Additional Users" page does show the correct $110/month pricing for your account. You can go to that page and purchase the additional users and then add their details via the Users page."

RE: How to Stop an Ongoing RAID Rebuild HP P420i RAID Controller
@scottalanmiller I just checked this morning. Still at 6% / 100%. No progress on the rebuild. Stuck in a loop, or just simply stuck and still a de facto RAID 0 right now.

Ninja RMM antivirus integration issues. Is Ninja even production ready?
Ninja RMM offers the choice of Bitdefender, Webroot, or VIPRE (now legacy for them) as solutions you can purchase from them as a part of their monitoring package.
What I have found is that when you switch from Webroot to Bitdefender (in their RMM console) it's not a clean, easy process.
I have been working for 4 months now trying to clean up over 300 machines that didn't make the switch gracefully.
Many still have Webroot on them (even though the policy is set to Bitdefender). Webroot isn't accepting the command from Ninja to uninstall.
Many will install Bitdefender but Ninja thinks it's not installed so it keeps trying to install Bitdefender on the machines.
Each time I contact support they are asking ME to run scripts on the impacted machines to fix things. We are wasting so many tech hours troubleshooting Ninja that it's no longer become a tool that saves us time, it's become a time blob.
It seems as if their software is not production ready. Beta, or maybe even Alpha status.
@scottalanmiller and I have been working to move off of Ninja, but that's another conversation.
Nothing for anyone here to really 'solve', but looking to see if others are having the same issues.
Does anyone here use Ninja? If so, what's been your experience?

So we talked to them and they had to wait half a day to find a person that we could talk to. When they finally got us someone they couldn't tell us about the product or about pricing. So.... won't be looking into this any further.
The guy I talked to said that the product manager was on the East Coast and had gone for the day but was going to call the manager on his cell to make sure he calls me tomorrow afternoon.
Seems like more than one person in the company should know about the product.
Yeah, not a great experience so far. We'll see.
They don't put their price on their website and tell you to call in to fine out. So we do, first person knows nothing, gets someone to call us back, and that person also doesn't know what it costs. Like... seriously? It makes me think that they haven't sold any yet and they are waiting to get an interested customer to start the process of pricing it.
How can you go through this much effort and not even be able to be told a price!!
And if you call the sales number it goes to a voicemail that is full.

RE: Catalogic vProtect for KVM
They are non-responsive as to a price but offered a demo.
Sorry but I'm not doing a 1 hr demo only to find out that the price (Unless free of course) isn't reasonable. From the disorganization so far I'm guessing it's expensive just to keep all the people who don't know anything about the product employed.

RE: Catalogic vProtect for KVM
I asked if they really had customers who would pay that amount. They said hundreds... Ummm ok, not thousands? Really?

RE: Connectwise Control / Screenconnect recommends you break the law to run their software
@jmoore said in Connectwise Control / Screenconnect recommends you break the law to run their software:
Wow, that's disconcerting.
Yes, especially when they advertise that Linux is a supported OS for the server. There is no mention on their system requirements that you have to be a small shop so that the software will actually work. They proclaim they are compatible until you actually buy the software and use it.
Especially when the EULA is so clear. This isn't a 1,000 page document. It's very specific as to here is what you can do with Windows 10 and here is what you cant.
We interpret a different way... I'm going to use that the next time I get pulled over for speeding and see if that works out for me!

RE: Connectwise Control / Screenconnect recommends you break the law to run their software
@IRJ said in Connectwise Control / Screenconnect recommends you break the law to run their software:
This is a strawman argument IMO. It is the customer's responsibility to use a properly licensed Windows Server. The software can run on multiple versions of Windows including workstation editions. You also could in "theory" use it on a workstation if you had to do so for testing.
It's different if someone decides to violate the MS EULA than for a company to openly state that you should violate it.

RE: Connectwise Control / Screenconnect recommends you break the law to run their software
@Pete-S said in Connectwise Control / Screenconnect recommends you break the law to run their software:
I don't think it is common knowledge among vendors what the MS EULA allows or not. The EULA states what is allowed and everything else is forbidden. But I've seen vendors even sell complete turnkey solutions with hardware and with Windows installed and where the usage is clearly not allowed and would have required a Windows Server license.
I think they know but don't care. Who's left holding the bag? The person running Windows 10 as a server is responsible not the vendor.
