As the title says, I am currently looking for alternatives for Dropbox. I've been a Dropbox customer for many years and quite happy about it except for one thing that I recently started checking for; the smart sync. Similar to the new OneDrive feature, where all files are on cloud, but only downloads when accessed on the computer. My Surface Pro is 256GB and would really like to keep the cloud storage usage minimal but get access to any file on demand. I checked Dropbox and found that I need to move from my current $8.25 / month to $16.58 /month. I get more features with this upgrade but I am only interested to get the "Smart Sync" feature.

Checked OneDrive personal which is $6.99/mo along with that i get MS Office for 1PC/Mac, also File On Demand as I needed. I would like to hear from your personal experience about OneDrive, is it worth the move?

Along with that, while searching similar topics, I found my own post from last year about sync.com! 🙂 (https://mangolassi.it/topic/11090/anyone-tried-sync/9)
https://www.sync.com/pricing-personal/ pricing is $96 /year with 2TB and similar features with end to end encryption, but as I mentioned on my post, with zero knowledge from the vendor, if I lose the password for some reason, I might lose the entire data, not sure if it is still the case.

Just signed up for Sync.com free account for testing and looks like there are no online playback option for videos on sync. Dropbox supports a lot of file extensions to be viewed online.

@ambarishrh I use OneDrive for personal use through my personal O365 subscription. It's like $99 a year, and the 1TB OneDrive space per person (up to 5 family members) is worth that by itself IMO.

Lots of new features now, it's getting so much better.

Hows the sync speed and do you face any issues with Sync?

I wasn't aware that Nextcloud has a download on demand feature.

Same here, @aaronstuder could you please confirm this?

Was thinking about that as well, but not really sure if i want to spend time on maintaining that, maybe I need to look for the hosted options, any providers that you recommend? Also does it have the file on demand feature?

The O365 account is used at multiple services (network monitoring, snipeit are some of them). I guess mailgun would be a good choice to avoid this altogether. The free version supports 10K mails

    • O365 SMTP Authenticated Submission client protocol change

I got the below message from O365 admin center today:

Starting June 1, 2018, we're introducing a limit of 3 concurrent connections per mailbox when sending emails using the SMTP Authenticated Submissions client protocol. This non-proprietary protocol is used to send email by legacy email clients, third-party software and services, and devices such as multi-function printers.

Also, sent emails will now be stored in the Sent Items folder.
      How does this affect me?
You are receiving this message because our reporting indicates your organization sends a high number of emails, using the SMTP Authenticated Submissions client protocol.

When this change is implemented, multiple legacy email clients, devices, or applications may no longer be able to send emails at the same time and may experience temporary errors forcing them to retry. This change will, most likely, impact mailboxes which send a large amount of emails.

This change does not impact Outlook clients.
What do I need to do to prepare for this change?
If your organization is impacted by this change, you have a few options:

      1. Use a different mailbox per application or device.
      2. If you are trying to send out bulk emails (such as a newsletters to employees) in parallel to using a 3rd party application, you may have to send it out in batches or use distribution lists.
      3. If time is important (such as with an alerting system that could generate multiple alerts at the same time), you will need to use a third-party email delivery service that is designed to send out large amounts of emails.

We have a lot of services where we've used a standard mailbox account to send out notifications, was planning to have this changed to an internal relay server pointing to O365, not sure how does this setup works after this change.

As an alternative option, first thing comes to my mind is to get mailgun as 10K emails are free on mailgun.

Do you have such requirements and if so what are your plans?

    • RE: ScreenConnect tips

I would like to add few tips that I found useful (few of them I learned during support session with screenconnect team).

I have these session groups created:

Computers categorized based on their hostname start. We have different standards for server and endpoints.

      GuestMachineName LIKE 'SRV*'

Filters all servers starting with SRV as a single group

      HostConnectedCount > 0

This helps me to manage who is connected, used in situations when I hit a license limit or want to know who specifically connected to which session

      GuestClientVersion < '6.5' AND GuestConnectedCount > 0

This shows the machines that are online and have an outdated client version. I just need to issue a reinstall command for those outdated agents.

Not sure if you've checked the compliance center in O365. There are lot of audit tools available like Manage Engine o365 audit. I just found this as well (haven't tested but looks interesting)

Tried another setup, this time after the initial setup, i just imported the SQL file and the site was fine with the old server data. Later on carefully checked and compared the differences in public, storage and config folder and moved data over to the new server (it was just the images) and cleared cache. Everything seems to be working fine as intended.

    • Migrating SnipeIT to new server

I have a snipe-it server (an old one, setup and upgraded through old versions to 4 now (4.1.0 build beta2). Had some issues and was unable to move forward to the latest version from that. I have around 700+ assets on it and wanted to setup a new server with latest version and migrate the data over to the new one.

I setup another CentOS7 version (i know that the common choice at ML now is Fedora, I need to test it out, but wanted to concentrate on snipe-it migration first to get it up and running on latest version). Installed snipe-it, went through the initial pre-flight configuration and got the first page on snipe-it. From there, i tried to use the SQL file from old server (which i got from the old server via admin panel backup, which has the sql file and 3 folders (storage, config & public). The moment i restore the db, and replace these 3 folders, the site starts showing the default Apache welcome page.

I thought it might be due to some configuration issues, and tried on a new setup again but this time used the snipeit.sh. All i did on the server was to install git and updated the server. Then ran snipeit.sh which did the rest (install apache, php 7.1, composer etc and setting up snipe-it) Got the site up and running, and again after restoring the old data back to the welcome page.

Anyone here did a migration successfully to another server?

      • It simply just works

Nothing that covers all your requirements list will just work. For example, I wouldn't be running anti-virus or IDS/IPS on a firewall box if I had a choice on the matter.

I also agree with @aaronstuder, PFSense is easy to understand.

Interested to know more on this specifically why are you against running AV or IDS/IPs on the firewall.

    • RE: File sharing with sandbox/malware analysis

There's an array of protection being enforced in our endpoints and immediate plan even includes end user training. Am evaluating and trying to find the right product and my first choice as of now is to go with knowbe4 security awareness training. I believe, adding another later of protection is always good.

On our exchange level (o365), we have enabled attachment scanning on executables (we have advanced threat protection) as part of our package and we could see that some of our vendors attachments are now being blocked and identified as Trojans. We are still risk with getting files from usb and so thinking of providing a file sharing solution that has some sort of protection on that level as well

Good to see that clamav is available on next cloud. As mentioned in my original post, i would like to see more about the heuristic analysis, as most ransomware or zero day threats cant be detected by signature based security solution like an av. File cloud fits this part well even though I am not sure yet on how good that heuristics analysis is.

Another option i would like to explore is to have some sort of sandboxing or behavior analysis tool on local storage and use next cloud as a solution along with clamav engine
