I don't have a spare bare metal or space on VMware to test this. When I tried on aws with a medium instance; this needs 5 instances to complete the setup, i got the warning that the resources doesn't meet the requirements. Didn't get a chance to explore further

      Five seems excessive 🙂

I tried to run the aws image but was not successful, need to spend more time to test this.

Ive used https://macroview365.com/case-matter-legal-sharepoint-dm/ which connects to SharePoint or there is another product from them for o365 and has plugins for MS office. Takes care of case number, files by date, user etc. Might be useful!

We recently hit by ransomware and now working towards enhancing our endpoint and server security. While checking for best practices, found this and interested if anyone tested this before.

Explorer flickering and mouse icon flickering were unrelated as i suspected!

Final Solution that worked for me:

Mouse flickering issue fix: Uninstall Spiceworks (Suspecting it was trying to run something and may be crashing due to lack of admin rights)

For Windows explorer flickering issue, i just disabled the "preview pane" and it fixed that problem as well!

Spiceworks is not supported in Windows 10...

oh! It worked when i ran (was checking the inventory part for something i needed internally), but i guess that explains why!

I installed spiceworks on my laptop to check something and uninstalled it now. The mouse pointer flickering issue is stopped but explorer flickering still remains!

May be the explorer flickering is something else related to windows 10, as i could see few posts about the same, but wondering why spiceworks could be the cause for this issue on a non admin user.

      Try this:

      1. Find the file %SystemDrive%\Users\Administrator\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\WebCache\WebCacheV01.dat
      2. Add the local "BUILTIN\Users" group "Full Control" permissions to that file.

If it works, it will take effect immediately and you'll immediately notice a difference. If it doesn't work, just remove the permissions and group you just added.

This fixes an issue with Windows 10 specifically. So if you aren't running Win10, don't bother.

It is Windows 10, tried the above steps but didn't help

      Eliminate some potential issues here

boot it from a usb stick with some flavour of linux

No issues when logged in as admin

And goes off if i give my user admin access as well, but i don't want to do that as a solution

    • Weird blinking mouse pointer issue on my work laptop

My HP work laptop has a weird issue since yesterday. My mouse icon shows the busy icon (mouse pointer with a circle) flickering the entire time i work. It is very annoying. Tried a lot of checks, and narrowed it down to only user who does not have admin rights. Seems like some process trying to complete and crashing may be due to lack of full rights. Anyone faced such issues? Google search gave me few results, one of which was to disable HP simple pass service, which i dont have in my laptop. Others was to disable windows error reporting and such but didn't really help. Another thing i just noticed is if i open windows explorer and try to take the window to use it as side by side, as soon as the window goes to smaller size before moving it to side, it just flickers as well!

We have office 365 with one drive and I am currently evaluating this to be used for users desktop and my documents backup/sync. Users can't see any other locations, so configuring those directories to be mapped to one drive would give them 1TB storage and j can enable longer retention on one drive admin.

We use NextCloud, then only back that up, not the remote user devices.

So using next cloud as a sync service i believe? More like Dropbox or one drive? If that's the case do you keep version history and give that back if a user request for restore?

We have similar requirements and was looking at backblaze too
