Refurb supplier
-
So from skimming search results from the forum, I''ve concluded that Xbyte is awesome apparently.
Has anyone bought from OptioData or OrangeComputers.com ? OrangeComputers' pricing is outstanding, and they have an eBay presence as well with very high ratings. They sell used hard drives with their servers. I've always purchased new in the past, so i've always had new HDs as well. But at the price of the used hard drives, getting a few extra on the shelf seems like a good alternative, and is very cost effective.
Just curious if anyone h as any experience with either of these companies.

I haven't heard of either of these companies, but I also don't often find my self searching for new server equipment.

Honestly I don't understand purchasing a new server at least 50% of the time when you can purchase a refurbished with the same warranty on it.

Oh I agree. Historically, that is all I've purchased, but that's just because the idea regarding anything refurbished was frowned upon by the powers that be. Now it's a different story however.

It's an older mindset where refurbished means it will go bad early, without warning and no warrantees. Not really the case anymore.

Never heard of them. I'd start with some small purchases from any new vendor, you can learn a lot about a supplier by how they treat you when you call up for a handful of CAT5e and a mouse or two.
I'd also call em up and ask them exactly how these are tested. Exactly how, don't settle for "oh well we have Mr Wizard in the back who does that and he ASSURES us it's ok". It should be an informative experience. You're not necessarily interested in how they test as much as you are how open and transparent they are. How well dude buddy knows the procedures in the back end, etc.

I've had good luck with Stallard Technologies, Inc. One of the best moves I ever made was starting to order Dell Precision workstations, so much better than the typical big box store junk.
Of course Xbyte is everybody's favorite.

I talked to them today and they said they assemble all the pieces, install an OS, and do lifecycle updates as part of the checking process.

Thought I would circle back on this one and give a review of OrangeComputers.
I purchased an R710 from OrangeComputers a few months ago. They were very willing to work with me on price and upgrade components for a very reasonable price. I believe they even upgraded the controller from a Perc6i to an H710 for little to no cost. The server arrived within about 2-3 days, very well packaged, and all firmware up to date. The condition of the server was great, and it has been running 24/7 ever since I booted it with 4-5 VMs on it.
In summary, after 3 months of usage, I would recommend this company for refurb servers, as long as warranty is not a huge issue for you. Their warranty is 90 days standard, but you can pay a little extra and get a 1 year warranty. If you want a 3 year warranty, then these are not the guys to go with. For home use, or even small business, I'd buy from them again. Their pricing is excellent.
