Thanks everyone.
I am running under the same impression as Scott.
I have a legal license, and OEM license (the sticker is on the PC). The HD died. I don't want to pay Dell $20 to mail me a set of recovery media.
The best option would be to get a Dell OEM Vista install disk. That Disk should see my license key in the BIOS and auto register.
In the case where I can't get a Dell OEM Home edition, then I'll take any OEM edition and enter my CD Key and it should register.
You should be able to find iso online somewhere
Until recently, MS didn't publish the ISO's, Dell and HP surely never have that I know of.. and I'm not sure I want to trust any other sources.
It's one thing to trust one of you, but a random website with an ISO.. yeah... no.

If the system has crashed already. You really don't have much to lose

You mean besides not being able to trust the system at all?

I really think you should Lubuntu or ChaletOS, would likely run way more smoothly compared to Vista....
I can even show you ChaletOS if you need (better hurry though) headed home for the day soon.

Thanks, but it's not for me, it's for a friend (heck it's for his kid). I have no desire to support them on a new platform.. I'm being nice enough just trying to reinstall the OS.
Luckily I don't have to worry about any data.

ChaletOS looks almost identical to Windows.
Albeit if he wants to install something, you'd be the person with a phone call...
Fair Enough..

Found it.

I've got all of those in some dark corner of my repo.
But of all things, I actually didn't have a Microsoft Vista ISO. Need a Win7/8/8.1 disk? How about XP/2000, even god forbid ME? Got ya covered.

ISO built... putting it online now. Will update when it is complete and ready for d/l

If you want, I have ISOs of some of the older ones.:-)

My Dropbox account is 75% full (of 5GB).
Exceeds the 2GB file limit on ODfB... have to look into that one later.
So - it's currently uploading to OwnCloud - Estimated 8 hours - It's a 2.87GB file.
-
Can I share a link in my OneDrive account and have you upload it there?

Is Linux really the best option for a kid's machine?
Does it run iTunes?

This is probably best for it's own thread.

Huh? I thought MS upped it to 10 GB per file?

Just saying, it's not always awesome for tweens.

What do you want the kid's machine to do?
It has replacements for iTunes, so even better!

My tween niece moved to Linux and went from annoyed with computers to loving them. Her teen sister (now they are both teens) loved it so much that she wants a Linux machine for Christmas this year.
