They are getting butts in seats and to cons which is a good thing.
GenCon is more about card gaming than D&D or RPGs anymore.
Things are always going to change. There are some awesome card games out right now
I have no complaint about card games as a genre. I do not happen to play one at the moment only because i have no time.
But GenCon lost its way years ago when WoTC ditched it and it became its own company.

I have heard it's changed for the worse. That's very unfortunate.

It has jack shit to do with Wizards and Hasbro. They are flat abandoning D&D.
Really? They've been pushing D&D 5E ridiculously hard since it came out, season event, new books and formats, it's not 3.5 for sure but it plays better, is much more streamlined, and easier to introduce people to. 4th Edition was a misstep sure but 5E has been bringing in a ton of new players that wouldn't have been exposed to the genre otherwise. Then you can introduce them to other RPGs.
Enworld has a release calendar and there is NOTHING worth a crap coming out for 5e.
5e itself has been out for 3 years now. There is almsot no content coming out. 2 decent products per year is nothing.

Laura and I just started playing A Game of Thrones The Card Game: Second Edition. It's very fun but I'm starting to see how daunting it is for her to play games like this. She's not a gamer and as much as she is willing to play I don't think she will ever care about winning. It's hard for someone like me to play a game casually. Not really sure how to include her in my hobbies sometimes and all she really does is practice her viola, read and watch the news.
I feel bad about it

That's really a move for the market. Card games are an ongoing revenue stream.

Some of my old D&D group were here last night and now that we are back in Texas we've decided to get the band back together.

Curse of Strahd, Volo's Guide to Monsters, Storm King's Thunder? These were released in the past year or two. All of them were excellent story lines. Tales from the Yawning Portal is decent too even if it's just a rehash of old products. They're introducing a new storyline very shortly as well which should have the same quality of Strahd or SKT.
They are also doing something new with Unearthed Arcana which I much prefer to a new Player's Handbook.
To be honest I'm really not a big fan of D&D it never captured me like it did so many people. And the revocation of the OGL with 5e rubbed me the wrong way. But to say that Wizards abandoned D&D really doesn't mesh well with what I'm seeing.

If you compare this release schedule with the release schedule of the past, there is simply no content coming out.
The core game is stagnating.

This is the huge stupid thing they did. On top of not release much content on their own, no one else can release any good content. SO the entire ecosystem has gone to shit.

But it's not different, actually they are releasing more. The core game is basically the same as previous editions.

The only thing that has changed is that 3rd party publishers can't publish books without incurring a, from all accounts, outrageous licensing fee.

This I will agree to. Limiting who can publish modules is just killing the game in and of itself. It's pushing all of the good publishers to other systems.

Try some story based or coop games. This one might be too young, but I've heard a lot of great things about it: https://www.plaidhatgames.com/games/mice-and-mystics.

I got my Switch last week and have played PuyoPuyo Tetris, MarioKart 8 and Breath of the Wild on it. Breath of the Wild is pretty much a perfect game so far, and being able to play on the go is great. MK8 is polished to a fine sheen and worth playing. So far I'm digging the Switch a lot and see it as a replacement to my Vita for mobile gaming. The battery life isn't great so if you're traveling you'll need a portable charger if you want to play for longer than 2.5 hours.

That's a good idea. Less me vs her and more us together.

I am talking about coop boardgames, just to be clear. Not CoD coop.
OH, like D&D.
Not Pen and Paper, board games in general. Haven't really convinced any players to try RPGs unless they've done them before... male or female.
I'm finding that half of everyone that I know, with some strong leaning towards the female, are playing D&D these days.
It's been a gaming renaissance of late. Lots of really amazing role playing games and board games are coming out in-part because of Hasbro/Wizards investment in the space since 4e. I'm not a big fan of D&D but I appreciate where it is driving the market.
It has jack shit to do with Wizards and Hasbro. They are flat abandoning D&D.
IMO, Board games are resurging thanks to Felicia Day and Wil Wheaton teaming up to produce Tabletop. Hasbro's celebrity D&D games drive a little, but not much.
I would say that board games were long since exploding by the time TableTop started but I'm sure they haven't hurt things at all. Crowdfunding has also been a crazy driver of both RPG and board game development since it came into existence.
Board games never ceased to be developed, but the popularity was never really changing.
Crowd funding brought money direct to game makers and it helped also.
Cards Against Humanity brought a lot of people to the table again, but that quickly because just another drunk party game to many people.
When Geek & Sundry started pushing things it really changed sales.
Games like Settlers of Catan, Carcassonne, Apples to Apples and Munchkin were finding their way into big box stores by 2011. Looks to me like TableTop started in 2012. Popularity was growing significantly prior to that which convinced those stores to take a chance on more interesting games.

Some friends of mine just started playing Don't Starve Together so I'm playing it with them. It's a very different game with 5 people.

Have only played with 2 and 3. I am terrible at it.

Played some Overcooked with my eldest and we managed to knock out a few more stars tonight.
