What do you use for personal backup?

I personally use CrashPlan with a 1 computer subscription to their cloud.

Costs $59.99/year and there are no limits.

Additionally, you can use it for free to backup between your own machines or to a USB drive.

The Windows client will not do shared drives, but you can get around that by using a linked folder (same as symbolic link in Linux).

I just setup my clean Windows 10 install and need to get my CrashPlan account back online.

The "LinkStation" folder is a linked folder for my local NAS that everything else backs up to.

sadly - not enough. I have files on USB thumb drives, USB hard drives, pulled Hard drives, Drop Box, Box and Google Drive.

Seems like I really need to set up a real solution.

Only thing is, is that I'd like to share the space for my dad and brother,.. Have to look into that.

I use box for all of the important stuff (I do that stuff manually). I signed up when they had a promo for 50gb free.

I didn't realize that you could link the folders. At the office they wanted CrashPlan Pro, so we have a small Ubuntu VM that just mounts the NAS folders and backs them up. Not sure why they support mounting in Linux and not Windows.

I've had good luck using BackBlaze.

These days because of the travel I've been doing manual backups to Amazon Cloud and OneDrive.

They don't support it. Linux mounts NAS folders locally. That is why it works.

Easy enough to do. Setup your dad and brother to backup to you.

You backup yours to the cloud, which includes the folder backing up your family.

For NTG: I keep copies of everything in OneDrive. But we also have a Unitrends appliance in our house. So I have a bare metal on there. I also have Backblaze and another copy of everything in Drop Box.

For GroveSocial: iCloud, Unitrends and USB Stick. There are only about 10 documents on this side of things though....

Non-critical data goes on an external 1TB hard drive. Critical is on Google Drive, and my wife's photography is backed up to Amazon due to the unlimited storage with Prime.

Oooh, I didn't put two and two together. I just saw this on their site "CrashPlan supports backing up network attached storage (NAS) on Mac, Linux, and Solaris." and just figured it was some decision they made.

I guess I could have read further down and saw this: "CrashPlan doesn't support backing up mapped drives on Windows. This is due to an OS-level restriction built into Windows"

it actually doesnt work this way.
Backups from other devices dont go to the cloud.

I have about 10TB of data on crashplan but my mothers, mother in laws, and wifes computers are ONLY stored locally on my NAS, just how crashplsn works, it'll backup a folder of about 1MB and thats it

Right. When you read the directions for backing up a NAS on Linux, all you are doing is mounting the NAS to a local folder like any other drive in Linux.

You can do the same in windows. Open a privileged command prompt and do this:

mklink /d  C:\LinkFolderName\ \\Server\ShareName\

I did it like this

mklink /d D:\LinkStation \\10.254.103.6\Backup

Of course they do. If you set your system up right.

All you have to do is include the local backup folder in your cloud backup set.

First, setup your inbound settings to save to your NAS via the linked folder like this.

Then setup your local machine to backup to CrashPlan Central and include that folder in the backup set like this.

I'm a moron. I never put this together. Instead of mapped drives I set up each desktop with a link to each share in different libraries. I never even thought to set up CrashPlan that way. Thanks!
