Pakistan downgrades ties with India in Kashmir row
The row between India and Pakistan over the disputed territory of Kashmir has deepened, after Pakistan said it was expelling India's top diplomat and suspending trade.
Indian-administered Kashmir has been on lockdown since the Indian government decided on Monday to strip the region of its special constitutional status. Telephone networks and the internet were cut off on Sunday evening. Tens of thousands of troops have been patrolling the streets. The Himalayan region of Kashmir is claimed in its entirety by both India and Pakistan, but they each control only parts of it. Instances of protest and stone-throwing have been reported despite the communications blackout and a curfew. Local leaders have also been detained. -
President Trump visits mass shooting sites amid criticism
US President Donald Trump has visited Dayton, Ohio, at the start of a trip to the sites of two mass shootings at the weekend which left 31 people dead.
He is now on his way to El Paso, Texas, where Hispanic people were targeted in an apparent hate crime. Earlier, Mr Trump said he was concerned about "the rise of any group of hate... whether it's white supremacy" or any "other kind of supremacy". But he himself has been accused of stoking hatred against Hispanic people. The Democratic congresswoman who represents El Paso, Veronica Escobar, is refusing to meet him, saying his "racist and hateful words & actions" had caused pain to her community and her country. -

Rosalind Franklin Mars rover nears completion
The "Rosalind Franklin" Mars rover is in its final stages of construction.
Engineers at Airbus (UK) are running through the end tasks of assembly and expect to get the six-wheeled vehicle out the door before August is up. Among the last items being attached are the robot's solar panels, and its mast and camera system. Rosalind Franklin is booked to launch from Earth in July next year. When she lands, in 2021, the joint European-Russian mission will search for life. Most likely, this will be evidence of past biology, but it's not inconceivable there are also microbes present on the Red Planet today. -

Venice bans large cruise ships from historic centre
Large cruise ships are to be banned from entering Venice's historic centre, the Italian government says.
Ships weighing more than 1,000 tonnes will be rerouted away from certain waterways from September. The move follows an accident in June in which a ship collided with a dock, injuring five people. But conservationists say the government's plans are insufficient to prevent underwater erosion and pollution in the lagoon city. Starting from next month, some liners will be forced to dock at the Fusina and Lombardia terminals away from the city centre, the Financial Times reported. By the end of 2020, a third of all ships will be rerouted. -

UK economy shrinks for the first time since 2012
The chancellor has told the BBC that he does not expect the UK to slide into recession after data showed the economy shrank by 0.2% between April and June.
Sajid Javid was speaking after the Office for National Statistics said the economy had contracted for the first time since 2012. The surprise decline came after Brexit stockpiles were unwound and the car industry implemented shutdowns. The pound slid after the data was released, raising fears of a recession. It hit a 31-month low against the dollar at $1.2056. Against the euro, it fell to a new two-year low of €1.0768. Rob Kent-Smith, head of GDP at the ONS, said manufacturing output fell and the construction sector weakened. -
