So Laura and I went to see an apartment this weekend that is much closer to work. It's an extra $400 a month for an apartment that is half the size of our current one. It's to be expected though. The further north you go in NJ the higher the prices. This place bases their leases on market value, whether your windows face the parking lot or trees, current amount of vacancies, etc. I asked them what the cost of living has been historically from the lowest to the highest and they said 10% - 20% per year. Wat? My current place goes up by $50 each year. This place could possibly be $4,000 more next year? It seems like our choices are either affordable unsafe areas or unaffordable safe areas. I've lived in crappy areas before myself but I can't do that with Laura around. Really frustrating situation. I asked her to find places with her ideal pricing and she found 4 places with high crime rates. Ughhhh.
If you are happy where you are at, don't move. The commute sucks, but being safe and having affordable housing sucks less.
It ends up costing us a lot just in gas and car maintenance. I'm driving an hour each way every day.

Wtf? How is that possible? Sounds like you need to invest in a new car. I have a 2014 Forester I put 60 miles on a day... I still don't hit 400$ every month even when gas is included. Sounds like you need to start changing your own oil.

I have an Aveo right now (they're known to be s***), driving it ~70 miles a day, and I don't put $400 a month into the thing, gas and maintenance included!
It's $400 every 1.5 months for maintenance. Part of the fees being higher is because i have a hybrid.

That's going to be a big bill.... it's why I just don't consider electric or hybrid ready yet.
I'm pretty sure the numbers still end up being less expensive for an all electric car even when you take into account the battery pack change when compared to similar gas cars with a normal maintenance schedule. Hybrids on the other hand are almost always more expensive.
The pure electric have the problem of range, even the Tesla's. How far are they going to get in a normal NE Ohio winter running heat and defrosters all the way?
Agreed. Range is still a big issue. Although they've found that the current range works for 90% of people 95% of the time, I think those were the numbers that one of the California Uni's put out.. It's just that 5% of the time that would be a killer.
California that might even be true. Ohio, Main, Wisconsin, Montana, etc, I have a little doubt about. If I could get an electric that would work for 95% of the time, I might start considering one.
I'm guessing even with heat and defrosters on you're still getting well over 100 miles per charge. That will handle most people's daily commute. It definitely would both mine and my wife's.
The person with an issue is JB and his weekly trip down south.
That was the finding. For most rural areas you'd still be in good shape with 100 miles/day... In a lot of cases I'd be cutting it close though but again that's probably the 5% of times I actually drive.. I really like the Chevy Bolt platform and will probably be looking into that next time I am up for a new car.

I think we're really close to the point where electric vehicles will be affordable and usable for the mass public.
I think we're already there for at least 75% of people living in or near major cities. It's us country folk who need the extra range.
Yep... we're extremely rural here but I still think an electric vehicle would work for 90% of people that I know around here. Although most people around here have the big truck that blows black smoke obsession so getting them to buy a Bolt or Tesla would be a miracle of evolutionary proportions.

I don't have that now. My Prius gets around 380 before I fill it. My truck at a 20 gallon take getting 12mpg only gave me 240.
What matters is the recharge time. I have no idea how long it takes to recharge to get another 265 miles.
Hey! Your Prius and my Forester get the same range. Granted I have a 14 gallon tank.
My Pris has an 11 gal tank, but I've only ever put more than 10 gal into it once. I normally fill it around 9.5 gal needed, I could squeeze another 60+ miles if needed.

20 minutes is a pitstop for most folks.
That's kinda long. I wouldn't want to have to stop 20 mins for every 3 hours I drive (70+ mph highway). I think the average stop for me is 15 min or less.

The problem with stopping at this client is that they are a Motor Fuels company. Do not think I could recharge there!

306 miles to a client that I could likely make a recharge deal with.
Now if Tesla is allowed to be self driving, then I could easily see getting close to the listed mileage because it would obey the speed limits, unlike myself.

Can it get it? I am sure, fuck my car can get better than 40 mpg if I drive a careful 55-60 at all times with super gentle acceleration. But that is not real world. -
The semi's I drove would get 1000+ miles per tank, but that's talking 120 gallons a tank, today it's closer to 200 gallons a tank
