Idk. I think I'll most likely have a climate controlled shed built for me to use as a carpentry workshop.
I'm lucky enough to also have a full cabinet shop, in addition to the garage. That was worth every penny to build.
Super jealous. I think within a year we will start looking for a builder for our house. It's an exciting time.
I do all of my own building and remodeling, so that keeps costs down significantly.
You build additions onto your own house? i'm not super handy with that kind of stuff yet
Yup, I've built homes, shops, done all aspects of remodeling. I do carpentry, masonry, electric, plumbing, flooring, roofing, etc., as well as building custom cabinetry and furniture.
That's fantastic. I want to get a CNC machine eventually for some projects I have in mind
Like CNC Shark, to do small woodworking projects?
Nah I want to be able to cut through aluminum and stuff. Pi projects mostly.
Most of the woodworking CNC's will do aluminum; it's so super easy to machine. Easier than some wood species, in fact.
Orly. Hm. I'll have to do some research on it. That Tormach looks like a great machine though.
I'll bet it works great... if you want to drop $5K on it. There are plenty of home-built options out there, too. Check out YouTube for units different people have put together.
Before I got into woodworking seriously, I spent 15 years as a production supervisor in a tool and die shop, running everything from vertical milling machines, to CNC mills, lathes, punch presses, and everything in between. IMO, for the hobbyist, there is no need to drop big money on capable tooling when there are so many cheap options today that will get the job done on all of that light-duty kind of work. -

One thing I have always lived by...A garage is a house for the car.
Blasphemy. I think I've parked a car in my garage once or twice. That space is far too valuable to park cars there that can exist perfectly well outside in the driveway!
I have enough room in my house to where having the car in there is perfectly fine.
I can appreciate that. Personally, I think I'd have to relinquish my man card before I'd be able to allow that space to be used as a parking facility.
Could also depend on where you live. I get 70" of snow a year, so having a garage is a good thing.

I'm in western NY. We get a decent amount of snow. Not sure it measures up to 70" a year, to be honest. I'm too lazy to look it up. I have a fairly long driveway, so I still need to run the snow blower, regardless of where the cars are kept.

If the cars are out of the way, even better.
My GF's father has a 330' driveway. That is a total nightmare to snow blow!!

Sure sure, until you're ready to kill the builder, your wife, and everyone involved over the so minuet things that "need a decision" and the timeline.

Cool I need someone to do some work on my house, and knock a few items off of the "honey do list".

Yeah, so he's right. NOW is the exciting time, not when you're neck-deep in the project and ready to kill everyone. That's specifically not the exciting time.

My father in law has had both of his homes built. Trust me, he's going to be driving the builder nuts. It's going to be funny. I'm sure there will be some stress, but the builders going to be experiencing most of it. Every. Single. Thing. Must. Be. Perfect. to my father in law. It's going to be really rough for the builder.

Suggestion - when the subfloors go down.. go around yourself and put in a million more screws... my floor squeak and that sucks!
