What is interesting to me are the rumors of this being the last major release of Windows...assuming that means you will get regular enhancements for free and such or perhaps Mac OS like $30 upgrades? With Windows 8.1 with Bing being free and this rumor, wonder where Microsoft will make up the cost of Windows Licenses...quite interesting indeed...

I thought that Windows 8 was the last major release. Windows 8.1 certainly was not a major release. Windows 8 is only arguably a major release. Windows 7 was pretty incremental. Windows 9 would have to be pretty shocking for Vista to not have been the last major release, IMHO.

@scottalanmiller , Windows 8.1 wasn't a full release, but I'd argue it's the biggest patch ever released. The patch/service pack for 8.1 from 8 took an OS that was extremely non-user-friendly, and not fully stable, to something that IT Pros gladly will use. I would never have used Windows 8, but I have no real problems with 8.1. I look forward to trying Windows 10.

I beg to differ. Windows 8.1 was, in fact, a full release. It is in no way a patch. It is a completely new kernel on par with 7, 8 and 10. It is the same update that created 2012 R2. Both are Windows NT 6.3, replace 8/2012 which was 6.2. Windows 10 is expected to be NT 6.4.

Where did you get the idea that it was anything but a full release?

You need to think in terms of the kernel to understand Windows. If you only look at the marketing material you will confuse the DOS/Windows family (3.11, 95, 98, ME) with the NT family (NT4, 2000, 2003, XP, Vista, 7, etc.) And without knowing the kernel you will confuse updates with major releases.

Calling it Windows 10 is not going to make things any easier for them.

My feeling is that Windows 10 (which does not make me happy as a name) will likely be a make it or break it moment for Windows. Mac OSX and Linux are taking Windows to task big time but people are mostly playing a waiting game to see what Microsoft will do with their upcoming release. They are giving them a chance to course correct now that Ballmer is out on his ear. Can Microsoft turn things around with someone new at the helm? Or will they continue to steer into the iceberg?

Windows 10 appears to be well situated to have a good recovery trajectory for Microsoft. But we will just have to wait and see. If they botch this like they did with Windows 8, they are going to lose market share very quickly. I think that they have to make this work.
