They have a free offering. That's what we use.

50 users. You have "all over the place" nothing more than 50 users?

I've never seen any limit on it. Just checked their terms and can't find the number or word 50 in the terms.

In absolutely zero places is it ever not saying 50.

That's Gateway. I'm using their DNS. I don't know what Gateway is, I've never looked at that before.

No one, other than you, is talking about simple DNS. The entire point of the thread, as mentioned in the title, is DNS Filtering Service.

Yes, that service INCLUDES DNS filtering, but they have other filtered DNS offerings that are not Gateway.

Just because you are lumping them together into a bigger product, doesn't mean we are discussing that.

Exactly, only DNS Filtering, which is all we are using. Gateway is part of a bigger product suite of which DNS Filtering is just one small part.

Gateway is a "VPN Replacement". It moves where your traffic goes. It's a huge service doing dramatic stuff. If someone wanted a VPN / Proxy system + DNS Filtering, you'd have to request that. That's 90% stuff that isn't related to DNS. Definitely not at all what the OP was asking about. The stuff that they compared to, like PiHole, is nothing like that whatsoever.

Can you give a link to the Cloudflare service you are talking about? Maybe that will clear things up here.

Did not know CloudFlare offers a DNS Filtering-only product. Do you have a link? It looks to me like you only get that as part of the CloudFlare Gateway.

Or are you referring to their DNS Server offering such as 1.1.1.1 which automatically blocks malicious sites?

                              It's part of 1.1.1.1. Which is 1.1.1.1.com

They have three DNS services. Straight is when you use 1.1.1.1

                              Filtered for security is 1.1.1.2

Filtered plus adult content removed is 1.1.1.3

It's a pure DNS filtering service. There's no other artefacts to it. And it's free. It's very basic, it does not offer (TMK) any customization. You either get wide open, security filtered, or security + adult content removal. You can't white list, black list, etc. But it's fast, free and effective.

If you mix it with something like a PiHole you can layer a white list / black list on top, but the OP isn't looking for that.

But traditionally, all DNS Filtering services work roughly like this. Some just add customization by requesting ID or some kind of login.

There you go. Just filtering, nothing else. unlimited use (from every source that I can see.)

This is what we use, almost universally. Free and super effective.

Not sure why this is assumed. I took it to mean they wanted similar features of a pihole which include adding specific filters and reports.

DNSWatch is what WatchGuard turned Strongarm.io into. It was not originally available outside their appliances after the buyout, but it is now.

I'd avoid using Webroot DNS. It's filtering seems to be overly broad, and the company I work for is moving away from it.
