Softphones - complaints

Like many here, we've recently deployed remote access, especially phones, to users to use from home.
In my case I setup a FreePBX in Vultr, hosted in Chicago.
FreePBX version 15.0.16.44
Asterisk version 16.9.0I've deployed LinPhone to Android users (it stays registered with nothing special being done) and Zoiper on iPhones for the push service (which even though the push service stays registered, the phones still fall off and frequently don't get calls - but I'm not here for Zoiper right now).
Several of my users are having call quality issues on LinPhone, dropped calls, bad sound, etc.
Linphone is exclusively installed on user's Android phones - this means that all connections are either WiFi or Cellular data. In some cases, moving to cellular data has solved their issue - crappy wifi at home I guess, but not in all.
I read another post here on ML that was saying WiFi is bad on SIP traffic - is that still true?
Should I be on a specific codec? Here is my current FreePBX setup for codex
Should I change this?
The previous thread I mentioned spoke about G722, which I've noticed is enabled on FreePBX, but is not enabled by default on LinPhone - should I enable it? Should I move G722 up the list order on FreePBX?
Should I use some other codec? Thanks in advance.

I have not done this but something to consider is that there is a huge quality difference in Android phones. It's possibe this is causing you issues if your users have cheaper phones.

That has never been true. WiFi is simply a nework connection. Poorly designed WiFi causes issues for everything. Just Voice services are more easily able to detect it since they rely on a live stream of UDP flowing at a smooth rate.
-
Could be that their home internet is shite and saturated. Both, on their WLAN and the ISP side.

OK that's an interesting point. They are all Samsung phones, but I'm sure some of them are super cheap Samsung phones, not flagships.
I also want to mention that I had one user on an iPhone 5 with Cox's OMG Panarama WiFi (crap), setup on Zoiper, and she dropped calls worse than anyone else... I really think her OLD ASS phone was the root of her issue. I replaced her setup with a physical phone (one of two I actually own) and her problems vanished. Of course I changed two things for her - 1) got off her old ass phone 2) moved from WiFi to wired connection.

Yes.
This is the default order I use.

Should I use some other codec? If you are having quality problems, no. Stick to
ulaw
only. G722 takes more bandwidth as it is a high def codec. Also,
opus
may help you if Linphone supports it as it was designed for more flexible network speeds. -

This is also a real concern now. I have a great home network and WiFi setup.
But randomly, my calls are simply shit anymore.
Why? Because everyone is home. It is filling up the ISP pipe to the various nodes.

Not just my calls on my deskphone, but also my T-Mobile WiFi calling.

yeah, I definitely know this to be true.. nothing we can do about this.. but troubleshooting to that point is something I still need to do.. Thanks!

Disable Speex. Opus is the replacement for that.
Where is ULAW G711?
-
Here is the default for LinPhone
-
PCMU = G.711
Disable everything but OPUS and PCMU in Linphone.
Change your PBX to only use G.722, OPUS, and ULAW. In that order.
See if you get any improvement.

Yeah, I'm not making phone calls right now....
not much better after almsot 5 minutes.

For comparison, a client site to their PBX also in vultr.

I have people complaining to me about network-related issues. I can't really do anything about it. I show them that there are other people that have been connected to the VPN for days. A couple users with the same ISP were having issues connecting to our remote desktop server. I had them try connecting to their phones via hotspot and it connected to the RD server. Obviously, this isn't a solution, just proving the point that the issue is with the home connection, not the company services/equipment.

Yeah, I've done the same with the phones - On WiFi things were shit, for some, and on Cellular it worked... i.e. home internet was shit, somehow.

That will always be the case. Wifi can improve, but the fundamental issues remain.

Actually they are identical bandwidth. That's part of the spec. It's just better encoding. G711 isn't very efficient.
Opus is HD and SMALLER.
